I understand that. But you could also say the striker is coming in to replace a carthorse who offered them nothing so even being half decent would be an improvement.
Mount isn’t terrible by any stretch. People can write him off after two games but it’s clear they’re still working out their best team. And the keeper isn’t Alisson standard but De Gea has been awful for them for years now and Onana is a bit like Reina for me. He’s a good keeper that will have the occasional brain fart but you live with that for the massive improvement he’ll offer them playing out from the back.
Eriksen and Casemiro are on the decline but that hasn’t happened from one season to the next. And Shaw is injured but that happened today. Does that mean we’re a weaker squad than last year because Konate has picked up another injury.
The fact you can argue it either way suggests they’re probably not too dissimilar to last year and they’ve yet to get their new striker on the pitch.
