The Unreliable LFC Transfer Rumours Discussion Thread (Part 3)

25m - 30m should be in the ball park for what Liverpool should expect for Gomez.

Homegrown player.
Accomplished defender.
Capable of playing multiple roles.

Sure his injury history and contract length make it difficult to get a more competitive price. But there’s every indication that he can do a job for a mid table club

Invest the Gomez money wisely and will be a good deal for everyone concerned. Keeping Gomez till he reached 30 wastes the time and position of needing to build VVD’s replacement. Gomez isn’t VVD’s eventual long terrm successor and it’s imperative that the last 2 years of VVD’s time with us are used to get the succession plan going.

Do players still get testimonials? They used to get them because they weren’t paid all that much. Now they get millions so giving them gate money from a testimonial match seems inappropriate when many people are experiencing hard times.

Maybe testimonials should have free admission and should just be a way for fans to show their appreciation.

Not about testimonials etc.

But there needs to be a way to recognise someone staying 10 years at the club.

At this point , Gomez is the longest tenured player in the Liverpool team.

Hendo got one before he left. From memory I think it was for 10 years service, with the proceeds going to a mix of his charity foundation and some local causes.

Before that, the last ones were Gerrrd and Carra and again, the proceeds went to a mix of their foundations and local charities

Wish Milly got his testimonial too. But didn’t stay in Liverpool for 10 years.

Phil Jones refused a testimonial for United because he figured no one was going to come. Poor chap.

I think it started with Niall Quinn, but if atop player has them now, they tend to be charity events.

Also think the best players rarely ever stay for 10 years at the same club. Atleast in the current times , post Gerrard.

Sure , Virgil and Mo might come close now. But it’s only the likes of Real , Barca , Bayern who do manage to really retain their best players for 10 years

There will be the really good players like Gomez , Hendo who do complete their 10 year tenure. But you’d have to agree that they aren’t the best of the best.

I’d frankly love it if Virgil / Mo completes 10 years at the club.

Probably means much more trophies.

Shame if Gomez goes. Great servant and great defender when fit. Also quality backup to CB and RB that is hard to find as players want more playing time.

They still do testimonials but the money nowadays goes to a charity I think.

Liverpool are closely monitoring 29-year-old England striker Ollie Watkins’ situation at Aston Villa as they plot an alternative signing to Newcastle and Sweden forward Alexander Isak, 25. (Football Insider)

What a load of tosh, he is 29, not our profile age for somoeone not World class

So he can be in the same position but with Marquinhos?

In abstract I would disagree, since depending on the context it might be an opportunistic signing, especially if perhaps we do think that Danns, Koumas, et al. are the real deal but just need time.

But otherwise in reality I’d agree with you.

Why does it say the same thing twice?

if he’s ‘targetting the premier league’ he must be fucking stupid to consider offers from United and Spurs. Even Chelsea looks crazy. He’d basically only sign for us on that basis.

Let’s take Relevo as a serious source - which I’m still unsure of, I guess I’ll need more time. Even if Chelsea, Tottenham or Man United qualified for CL, would a highly rated young player who’s just broken into Spanish national team and who’s serious about his development choose any of them over Liverpool (or Man City or Arsenal, for argument’s sake)?

From memory Relevo has been good with our Spanish and Portuguese league signings in the past few years, whether that translates to England is a different question. I think the most we can infer from this is targeting the pl means staying in England rather than heading over to Europe. Doesn’t necessarily mean he’s prioritising any particular one of the four English teams willing to pay his release but rather he’s prioritising the English offers over the European ones

Also the other teams listed have a clearer pathway to the first 11, vvd and konate will not be as easily displaced as the CBs of the other clubs
