If we sign Leoni it gives us some leverage to hold firm on our price for Guehi. £35M or we come back to it in January/summer 2026.

I think the ideal is signing both, assuming we rate Leoni highly, and leaving the younger player in Italy on loan for a season to continue to gain experience. We could have a clause to recall him if we have an injury crisis, but Virg, Konate, Guehi and Gomez as four recognized central defenders should be enough.

Leoni then comes to join the party next summer, by which time a few current unknowns about the upcoming season will start to resolve. E.g. Will Konate sign a new deal? How much will Gomez be available? Will Virg be at his imperious best and/or how much will we need to start rotating him?

If we want to prolong Virgil’s career with us, we need to rotate him out especially for the League cup and the FA Cup and some PL matches against relegation fodders.

Konate and Guehi will rotate with each other.

Gomez? If you are still keeping the faith in him, he will set you up for disappointment by being the Doctor’s and Physio’s best friend for this season.

Okay so at least number-wise we could say that defence looks serviceable (whether Guehi moves or not).
But we are three down in the attacking department and only have one proper first-team option. I am not counting Rio yet, especially given Arne’s penchant for relying on seniors.
Frankly I don’t see what will suddenly cause Chiesa to revert back to his pre-injury rampaging self, especially given that he hardly ever leaves the bench. Even less than Harvey!!
This whole brinkmanship with Newcastle is doing us no favours. I think we should (if we already aren’t”) be getting in two more attackers and the clock is ticking.
