The Unreliable Rumours Discussion Thread (Part 1)

Frankly, if Grealish is worth 100mil, Mbappe is definitely worth more than 137mil.

C: We don’t need to sign anyone else, and the current squad is good enough for 2.5 competitions. The other competitions that are left over (FA or LC), don’t warrant the spending of any money. In other words we have the squad to win both the PL and CL the hard way, but would need to be lucky by way of draws, and other top sides knocking each other out, in order to win anything else.

We simply don’t need any ā€œextraā€ bits to compete or win the league. I would even go so far as to say that our squad is probably better off than 2019-20. What we need to do is to make investments for the future.

Generally I am pretty happy with the squad and don’t see the need for any new signings - unless it is a case of act now or lose a generational talent forever ie Haarland or Mbappe turn around and say they want us, but must be this window or never

I hope they refuse to sell him and in 5 months time he signs a pre-contract with who ever he wants.
Strange he turns 23 in December and is therefore allowed to do this. Was this his plan all along?

It’s not his age that allows him to do this, it’s the fact that he’s entering the last six months of his contract.

I thought that only applied to players 23 and over.

Nope. 23 is only relevant for training compensation.

I see. So they would be entitled to training g compensation if he was under 23?

It would be ridiculous is PSG got a cent for ā€œtrainingā€ him.

Both depending how i’m thinking about it

A) If we don’t sign anyone else, I’ll be fine with that. I don’t believe that we got to where we are with a Premiership and a European Cup, with a squad full of stars by accident. These people know what they’re doing.

B) I’m absolutely open to a new signing. Despite all the talk about the midfield, I worry about the drop off in quality from the forwards (Jota aside) if we had an injury crisis.

If KM goes, this really will be one of the greatest examples ever of the saying, " money can’t buy you class."

c). For me, a ā€˜wonderkid’ () youngster forward around 18-20 yo. Someone with more height and athleticism than Jota and Minamino but who isn’t a million miles off, just so we have something slightly different if we need him during an injury crisis.

In the - now distant - past we’ve done pretty well in bringing youngster forwards through the academy but none under Klopp. I think it’s an area we need to target for continuity as Firmino gets older. I do wonder if our lack of success here recently is a sign that it’s difficult to mould a youngster to play the role of role we need. Strikers are very different to what they were 20 years ago.

I don’t think we need someone who’s ready to start now simply because I don’t think it’s wise loading up more wages with what we’ve been doing over the last 2 years with our re-signings. Just someone who would be expected to blaze a path through the reserves teams rather than making the bench of the firsts.

I think the midfield is fine for now, with plenty of depth, and next summer we should look at replacing Milner with a young player. Then depending on what happens with Ox and Keita, perhaps a second midfielder will be required.

With Jones and Elliott in situ, the age is starting to come down, and that sort of evolution needs to continue with one or two more, but next summer is fine to address it.

As for now, ideally we add another striker. We need five good ones for three spots, and right now we only have four. It’s not massively perilous, but with an injury or two, and once AFCON rolls around as well, it will start to look a little short.

Jonathan David, or Jeremy Doku, someone of that sort of profile, hopefully with a very high ceiling even if a little raw now.

Edit:
Trying to suggest realistic names, but obviously if we have a sniff at the likes of Mbappe, Doku can fight Jedi Knights elsewhere.

At the start of the summer I wanted a CB, a CM and a forward type. Konate ticks the first box. It appears Elliott is ticking box number two but I’m still a bit nervous about the injury proneness of too many in that area.

The one up top is the one I hope we address before the window closes but it looks like that depends on at least Origi going, if not Origi and Taki. Afcon is a huge concern and I’m worried we’ll try and get by using Ox or Elliott higher up. Like the links to Doku and Damsgaard but can’t see either coming in at this stage in proceedings.

Good summation. I’m pleased with the defense and midfield options (midfield to evolve further as one or two age out, but we are OK for now).

We look one short up front for me.

I’d like us to buy a competitive young AM who can do a job on the wings.

I think we can compete mind my concerns are these gaps when we lose players especially if an injury happens

Probably B. Maybe Sarr or Doku to replace Origi/Shaqiri.
