All signs indicated he’s Barca bound. They may even consider selling Raphinha to make it happen
Eichorn looks a decent talent but I don´t think we are in a position to be buying decent talents for 10s of millions.
Whoever we buy needs to come in and put in very good performances right now, unfortunately. Such is the amount of work we have left ourselves to do this summer.
I guess that since FSG isn’t going with the multi-club model, Edwards decides to go with a different route and pick up a lot of unproven young players?
Jürgen was big on having a number of British players for their attitude and fight. That’s why we had Millie, Robbo, Hendo, Lallana, Ox, Joe, and of course Jones over the years. Even the non-scousers understand the ethos and demands of being a Liverpool player and the foreign players learn from them.
Can’t really get enthused by any signings while we keep those above. Not to mention selling the likes of Jones. It’s almost as if Arne and Hughes have turned double agent and are working for our rivals
Spot on, that’s why I like the look of Elliot Anderson, good robust player who is both good and off the ball and doesn’t hide.
As well as being a good footy player he seems to have the right attitude and mentality.
Wharton may be the more eye catching player but we need a more warhorse type of player who can still play footy and set standards and doesn’t miss games.
Ahem.. Curtis Jones
I am a big fan of Curtis he is underrated by many on here and is excellent at ball retention, which has been an issue for us and his progressive passing numbers are a lot better than most think, but for me not as good off the ball as Anderson.
Retention? But where is the product? When he has a good game you want the next to take by the scruff of the kneck. He does not. It’s time to stop hoping.
Well he’s a deep-lying midfielder who has been playing at RB so he doesn’t get a lot of opportunity to take the game by the scruff of the neck. It’s not his role.
Anyway while I always support development of academy players Jones is miles ahead of any of them. Nyoni and McConnell are the only viable midfielders to come in to the first team and neither of them have achieved anything close to Jones’ success at youth level. The only one who comes close is Kieran Morrison if he were to transition to midfield but he hasn’t had a sniff of the first team yet.
Getting rid of Jones would be yet another self-inflicted wound after the needless loss of Quansah. Personally it would only deepen the feeling that this version of Liverpool is disconnected from the fanbase and local area.
Jones is a huge case that makes me lose faith in Slot. I don’t know what he wants to build. If he wants control and a passing game, Jones should be the first name on the team sheet, but the truth is the opposite. It’s really mind-blowing.
True. Current squad lacks some real steel. We don’t have any ‘hard’ players like back in the day.
We may as well go back to Charles Hughes footy, everyone gung ho, lets just get the ball forward, miss out midfield and hit long ball over the top or to our CF who can compete with groks to win the ball
I’d be quite surprised if Slot knows what he is trying to build,.
Certainly hard to get a finger on!
Sounds a bit desperate, oh let’s buy some wingers to get Isak to score more.
Downing springs to mind. The reliance on two people who haven’t yet arrived and a goal scorer who has been out all season.
Oh I can see we are going have a good season.
Sounds great, I’ve still got a Charles Hughes book somewhere from the 80s.
I don’t think that has been what Arne has been calling for though. When talking about wingers he has often commented about the need not just for pace but that they also have an ability to beat their defender and get the ball to players better positioned to score.
I’m sure he would also want them to be a bit more switched on defensively than we had with Mo.
Yup. Two wingers won’t solve the issue of Mac being cooked - an issue which, incidentally, is only going to get tougher to manage when Jones leaves just to get away from Slot. It won’t solve the issue of Grav being overplayed and misplayed.
It won’t solve the issue of Ekitike being injured for half of next season and possibly will never be the same player again, while our only other CF is an injury crock who’s looked rubbish on the few occasions he’s been fit.
It won’t solve our issues at the back when we have three players who can play RB - one of whom is good but always injured, another doesn’t look comfortable in the role and the third is likely leaving this summer. Or CB where our no1 player is in his mid-30s and visibly slowing down (yet still required to play every minute of the season), our second-choice is out of contract and even if he stays was crap all season, beyond which we have a kid coming in from another league where he was injured for the last half of the season, and another kid who was injured all season.
It’s a bit scary how we can see issues in the playing squad from front to back and the club higher-ups are talking in terms of only signing “one or two” wingers as if it will magically solve anything.
Even if Slot goes and that’s the only summer business we do, we’re probably fucked. If Slot stays, we’re doubly fucked.
Oh, for the halcyon days when Nunez vaulted over the advertising boards to go celebrate the Carabao cup win with the youngsters and Klopp thinking “wtf I thought he was injured!”
I don’t think they have said that though have they?
I think it looks pretty likely we are trying to get Wharton in for the midfield - wouldn’t be surprised if we see more on that once Palace play the final of the Conference Cup.
However, with the wingers/ forwards specifically, we’ve clearly got spaces open now that Mo is leaving and Hugo is going to miss at least half of the season so it isn’t surprising to see that’s where the ‘news’ is focusing on at the moment.
The article in the Guardian I read yesterday talked about how important the flanks were to our campaign last season, and it’s been fairly obvious we have had big problems there this season which impacts the rest of the team.
You’re right that new wingers won’t solve everything, but they can move it in the right direction.
