Feels like a while since our proper monitoring days, blast of nostalgia, that.

Darwin on a free and reasonable wages is a no brainier for me. For all his faults he has pace, presses for ever and has passion in spades. As a backup for Ekitike during injury and an impact sub he would be awesome. Also a rotation option as Isak will need to be managed due to injuries (we all saw that coming for £125m - except Hughes).

Well exactly. Apparently he even played 45 mins against the mighty Saudi Arabia although no one is sure.

Genuine question, if he hadn’t already played for us do you think you’d feel the same?

I see Jhon Duran, another to take the Saudi riches, was sent out on loan last season. I think I’d rather take him on loan if there was the chance to do that rather than have Darwin back.

I respectfully disagree.
He’s past the age when he’s likely to improve and his post LFC career has hardly been stellar. We’d be getting a player inferior to the one we deemed not good enough.
What would be his motivation if he knows he’s a six month temporary solution while Hugo recovers? How would he integrate with the team? Is there any chance he’s learned English in the meantime? or the offside rule? or how to hit a barn door?
I’d much rather bring in someone younger with a higher ceiling and commitment and motivation.

That’s harsh. I mean he probably isn’t the sharpest tool in the box…

It only seems like 12 months since everyone was glad to see the back of him.

I can see the attraction of having him as a cheap backup, but I am wondering if there is a better option. If the club is considering him, is it more financial considerations?

I was not glad to see the back of him. Loved his attitude and effort.

We’ve all got short memories.

I think what you really miss is that team he was a part of that still had a significant bit of the methods and attacking menace of Klopp’s best teams. When things worked for Darwin, they did within the framework of a team that had Jota, Diaz, Robbo, Trent.

Even then, it never worked when Darwin was the main man. He had enough misses derail any kind of title tilt that Jurgen launched in his last couple of years.

And two seasons ago his input was limited even more.

He comes across as a really positive character with a great attitude. Unfortunately he isn’t quite good enough for what we REALLY need him to do, score goals. I love the lad and with him nothing but the best but it doesn’t serve us moving forward and he would come here and see how the place has changed.

And he would miss Jota all over again. Because in his heart of hearts I am sure he remembers the Anfield and Kirkby WITH Diogo there.

Things change in life, and it can be sad for some time, but the most healthy thing to do is to let it go, which makes space for new things/people to come in.

Fair enough. I guess after the languid, apathetic performances of last year I am pining for some passion and effort.

By introducing the guy whose final season here was defined by a series of languid apathetic performances

I note you don“t mention any qualities he has with the ball.

Times have really changed in football.

He was the first one who really came to grips with the meaning of Slotball

What’s Arbeloa up to?
He played for us, and should be cheap

Think Barnes is free too.

I understand the concerns with Nunez - he was very much on the periphery of Slot’s team at the end and I think his passion for the game waned under his leadership. But frankly, I think it’s fair to say that Slot is probably the worst kind of manager for someone like Darwin.

The issue is, we have two strikers signed for big money. One of them is injured and it’s unclear when he’ll return, the other is currently healthy but is far from dependable in that regard. We’re in a difficult situation where we need to find a stopgap until Hugo is back, but most of the Liverpool-quality options out there won’t want to sign here knowing that in twelve months, they’re likely on the periphery.

So that leaves us with an assortment of less-than-ideal options, from signing someone of a lower quality to playing Gakpo out of position after he failed in that role last year.

Darwin fits a sweet spot - he’s available on a free, he would likely take a short term deal, he’s (about to be) 27, he’s fit, and when he’s on(side), he’s can be a dangerous player. The risk is low with him because it’s a short term deal, but the potential reward is high if Iraola can unlock him.

Give me another option that makes sense.
