He really is like an omniscient sage, isn’t he?
It would be very surprising if we weren’t, unless he has already committed to joining another club.
Given how Guehi handled himself throughout the process where we failed to sign him, I would be very surprised if he didn’t end up here. (Assuming we are still interested).
I did mention Semenyo a number of times. He would instantly make our pressing better.
Does that also mean Salah might be sold?
I doubt it. If he wishes to leave, we will not stand in his way, but I don’t see him doing that any time soon.
Semenyo can play anywhere across the front three so provides options with or without Salah
I think the potential of selling Salah (more or less when we want it and for the finances we would want) is harder now.
Easier said than done, from different angles.
Those are the decisions that are not easy. Most people were shouting to give him his new contract, pay whatever it takes, etc.
Hopefully he can get back to his level soon. He might not hit the 30+ mark, but if he can still hit 20 goals or so, in coleration with a team that functions well, that may be enough.
I think that we’re seeing Salah play out his final season at Liverpool. In hindsight, the signs might have already been there since PSG tie but the whole team has been playing poorly in that period, so it was hard to pinpoint just one player. It’s not got better for him this season, though, quite the opposite.
For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t be surprised if the club allowed him to leave on a free or for some modest fee in the summer, just to have his wages off the bill. He’s earned it, after all.
Nah, I absolutely don’t expect that. It’s far from a fringe player on low wages with not a lot left on his contract when you sometimes agree to terminate the contract. This is different, there is still important value. It would massively depend on the market, would there be a willing buyer, when and for how much. Maybe a solution could be found, but I would hope that it doesn’t mess with our transfer window, so we know in time that it’s time to add a new serious player for the right side.
It is precisely because he is not a fringe player on low wages that there is the incentive to smoothing over an exit for him, even for a trivial fee, once we decide we’ve reached a point where we’re no longer getting value from him on the pitch. A Mo that is no longer playing regularly is an enormous gap to fill and that becomes much easier to do once his similarly sized wages are off the books.
I tend to think this will be Mo’s last season at Liverpool. He has been off form. OK, it happens to everyone, but it has been going on for a good while, and it raises the legitimate question about age, and his level slightly declining.
In addition to form, he will be going to AFCON and missing 7-8 games in the crucial part of the season. Against that backdrop the new attacking talent we have brought in will be getting better and better.
Mo has been brilliant. No two ways about it. Nothing but respect and admiration for him. And with that said, it is ok to point out that he’s not what he was. It’s not disrespectful to offer a fair footballing opinion.
My take is that with whatever time Mo has left at Liverpool, whether it is this season, or the full length of his remaining contract, his position needs to change. As a winger he troubles few fullbacks these days. But if he played in a two up front, with Wirtz pulling the strings behind, we know Salah has vision and can finish. But at that point he wouldn’t be a fixture in the side. It would be the best two strikers, based on form and fitness, and if Mo makes a sufficient case for himself to start, bring it on.
My best guess is he will have a modest season and the newer breed will come to the fore. This will culminate in a move elsewhere next summer. Very few clubs can pay his salary, and at that point it would remain to be seen whether or not he stays in elite football, or moves to Saudi Arabia.
Either way, I don’t see us fighting tooth and nail for the biggest possible fee. It will be a small fee if it is to another European club, and maybe 50M if it is to the Saudis.
The money will be reinvested towards another player. Olise looks the best option to me, if we could do that. I’m intrigued by Semenyo. And then it will be interesting to see how up and coming wingers such as Minteh, or Fofana, keep progressing.
It’s all speculation and we are just passing the time of day as fans. Salah has been brilliant. On the couple of occasions I have had to see him here in the States, I have driven decent distances with my lad to watch him and sing his song. He has been brilliant.
All we are seeing is a tale as old as the game itself, and it happens in all sports as an old proud lion eventually gives way to newer, hungry lions who are rising up. How long the transition lasts in anyone’s guess. My guess is this season will be it.
FYI, this should be in the Unreliable Rumour thread as it isn’t a confirmed story, or from a reliable source, so mods will most likely move it.
Here’s another can of worms opened…
FFS! It’s reported in several places! ![]()
Yeah, but it’s all unreliable until it’s reported by a reliable and trusted source.
It would be pretty nice, though, wouldn’t it?
If we buy a winger, particularly a right-sided one to replace Mo, then it again begs the question of why we bought two CFs for sp much money.
If we were to play two up front, then where would the winger play? We would be expecting the overlapping full backs to provide crosses, so wouldn’t a winger be superfluous?
This is a fair point that I wonder about. I see a midfield diamond as the best way to utilize our new attacking talent. If we buy another winger I would see that as an alternate arrangement, as you have to have more than one way to play.
The caveat for that is whether the winger is young, like Ngumoha, or very expensive, like Olise or someone of that level. If it’s the latter, I’m wondering why we are buying another expensive attacker without really seeing how all the attacking talent fits together. Whisper it quietly, but it might be starting to take a step in the direction of Chelsea (a much more extreme case) of just buying talent without a crystal clear plan for what you are going to do with it.
I think Guehi is no longer interested in us.
