The Unreliable Transfer Rumours Discussion Thread (Part 4)

Leoni was mentioned purely in a positional and value context, not as a critique of the player. First, Leoni is a centre-back, so referencing him in a discussion about centre-back recruitment is entirely logical. Second, the comparison was about market value, not player quality or risk. A £26m fee for Leoni reflects investment in a high-upside prospect. Referencing that figure simply provides context for why £20m for a proven, 25-year-old England international centre-back represents outstanding value. That is a pricing argument, not a judgement on Leoni

Don’t forget his contract. He’ll probably earn double of what he’d have earnt at LFC. In that sense, this move will be a success for him, that’s for sure.

That’s the difference between City and us in the transfer market. They are ruthless, we are market opportunists.

Well 115 charges will explain why a team can be ruthless.

Also explain to me Wirtz who City showed an interest in and then said was too expensive?

We didn’t spend money on Wirtz and Isak because they were cheap, you can argue the priorities and you’d have a point but lets not pretend the summer didn’t happen.

that part for real!!

They have no limits at all in their spending, while we are bound to spend within our means, and to respect FFP.

We were willing to drop £15m more on him 5 months ago, in this instance it’s nothing to do with spending power.

Its also a reflection of the faith they have in their strategy, and the risk they are willing to take…

Whichever way you look at this, it’s a big mistake on our part not signing Guehi this month. We need defenders and he is a a top class one. We messed this up last summer, leaving it until the last day of the window, just to save a few pounds. Now it’s come back to bite us on the arse and one of our rivals has snapped him up. I expect a certain moderator on here to harangue me for blaming the club, but that’s how I see it.

It could be that after our erratic first half of the season, Guehi might have cooled down over the perspective of joining us. At Cheaty, he’ll be involved in a fight for the biggest honours. We’ll fight for top four.

Signing on fee + contract… again, he’ll probably earn the double of what we could have paid him.

When a player thinks about the money, we can’t compete. In order to get him (as we did with VVD for instance), we’d have to sell him a wholesale vision of the club. As it looks, Guehi isn’t convinced anymore by our project, but very much by Abu Dhabi’s $$$.

Palace reneged on the deal we had. There’s your guilty party.

Have Palace had £15m worth of value out of him since August? Is Glasner still going to chuck his toys out the pram?

Disappointing but he’s far from the only CB in the world, albeit the only English one we could likely get.

*Edit just seen the Glasner news. Be furious if I were Parish.

Glasner doesn’t care what happens now because he’s decided to leave at the end of the season.

Parish was given a bad hand, with the Textor shit dominating their attention and the loss of their DoF, but he played himself as this was the most predictable outcome in the world

Not that I care about them, but from a Palace fan perspective, this is the ultimate clusterfvck!

You pulled out on a 35mp deal with LFC to appease your manager, after you had earlier turned down a 65mp offer from NUFC.

You now take 15mp less, and lose your manager whom you were appeasing in the summer…

This was a cock-up in summer, albeit one that was created by Palace reneging on an agreed deal. I don;t understand our claims that buying him now is not the opportunity it was last summer. It’s utterly illogical because he’s apparently going to City for £20m.
The issue in all transfers comes down to where the player wants to go, not the bidding club’s offer. If Guehi wanted to come to us and not City then all he had to do was tell Parrish that.. It’s clear City have offered Guehi (and his agent) a package that they can’t turn down - massive salary AND signing on bonus that we can’t match. If there was a gentleman’s agreement he would come to us and he’s broken it, then you can understand why we wouldn’t make a counter offer.

Decisions are taken in real time, they decided what’s the limit they could lose last summer. We know the problems they had. And not everything is presented in money’s worth. There’s football to be played, a team that needs to remain stable. Don’t know why he would be furious, all this time they probably work on scanning who their next head coach might be. Football as usual.

I’m frustrated we’re not signing him given the deal was agreed in the summer with all parties, before the Palace U-turn. We were prepared to go for him them, so a lack of activity now (on him), when we have a shortage at the back and could clearly do with bolstoring the squad there, is just difficult to understand. He would also have helped with the squad in terms of the home grown gaps we need to fill.

Rumours swirling around that Guehi will be on £18mpa (£300kpw) - maybe we weren’t prepared to meet that, so walked away. The club do tend to keep things quiet/away from the media.

Really could do with the club pulling a rabbit out a hat this window - not much about though. Other CBs going on a free this summer are Upamecano and Senesi from Bournemouth - don’t fancy the former, and the latter is decent and could do a job but not a long term.

Perhaps that is answered by the below - how much is the salary and signing on bonus?

Yeah, but needs must. Taking things so personally is like cutting your nose off to spite the face. It’s just business

Is this some kind of set up…last season Glasner didn’t want to sell him…he needed him for his team…but now Glasner has announced he’s leaving at the end of the season…Guehi has gone to the shitty…but didn’t Guehi ( at one time) say he preferred LFC…was this the idea from the start of the season…sounds iffy to me…or shifty…go play for the shit team…wouldn’t trust em…
