If we don’t sign a central defender in January, that is a big mistake. We are threadbare and vulnerable to one more injury.
As for Guehi himself, we all but had him, they reneged, we probably were happy to sign him in the summer, but then Man City came in and paid a fee, plus likely a large signing bonus, plus the rumoured £300k per week wages. We should not even attempt to match that as it is too much.
The question for Man City’s business is why aren’t the 115/130 charges hitting? I suspect it’s because the issue is bigger than football, and bleeds into government, and they will likely never be hit with a punishment in keeping with their cheating. Ugh.
Back to LFC transfers.
I can mentally move on from Guehi as it sounds like the deal was not worth it, when you add it all up and don’t just focus on the reported transfer fee.
What will bite much harder than missing Guehi is not signing anyone in January. We can all name several transfers we could do with, but keeping it realistic and limiting it to one glaring need, a central defender seems a must.
Perhaps, but I’m not sure that rationale passes muster. We’ve got Mo coming back in a week, and you’ve got Gakpo and Chiesa available now. All three of them can play up top. Isak also has a solid chance of playing again this season. So, we’re not as thin up top as we are at CB, where one injury basically leaves us in a really bad position at the back.
You weren’t talking about his wages though. You spoke about a ‘splurge’ , insinuating a massive signing on fee which hasn’t been reported anywhere , on top of the modest transfer fee.
yep, in hindsight i think the moment we missed out on him in August we probably up against it, and it seems like the club knew it too…
no point in even mentioning the transfer fee, its the wage structure that became the issue…
even if wages plus fee add up to more than what our package would have been or will be for an alternative, we cant be offering 200 to the rumour 300k a week for a new centre back without massive repurcusions…
i also noticed elsewhere, did you see the news for Marcs family keeps getting better, in completely unrelated news, it seems Marcs kids lemonade stand business has just signed a multi million dollar deal to supply lemonade to Abu Dhaby…
Mo, Gakpo and Chiesa could play up top at a push. However, we’ve no idea what’s going to happen with Mo, Gakpo is woefully out of form and Slot refuses to play Chiesa.
And every time you move one of them, someone needs to fill their space. Frimpong can’t play right back and right wing at the same time, Gakpo’s back up is a 17 year old and Slot refuses to play Chiesa.
So yeah, defence is thin but I could easily see why there might be some caution about other areas.
