The Walking Eagle thread

Trump will win this one with ease.

Based on what?

Based on the fact that people were stupid enough to elect him the first time. And stupidity doesn’t just go away suddenly.

there’s a pandemic that kills boomers, that’s what changed

Yeah I get that, but what has gone away is Clinton. There are just so many parts of the equation that changes that I just dont think you can draw too many parallels between the two elections. Even when you see a poll that has the same top line numbers as one from the same organization from 4 years ago, there are ways to pull apart numerous different implications from the two sets of polls.

I think there is still a reasonable chance that Biden does not get elected, but almost none of that comes from a concern that more people will intend to vote for Trump than for him.

I didn’t watch it. But apparently Biden had no major gaffes or mental lapses so I suspect that’s enough for him and too little for Trump.

when asked to condemn white supremacists, trump told the right-wing racist paramilitaries to ‘stand by’, then shortly afterward encouraged his people to show up to watch polling places

the proud boys etc took it is as explicit encouragement

and the police have repeatedly demonstrated that they consider those goons to be ‘friendlies’. encouraging development

The irony is that Trump’s performance masked any gaffs that Biden might have been on the verge of making. I dont get how you can make your opponent being a doddering old fool one of the central campaign tactics and then dont give him the room to demonstrate that failing when it comes to the debate. And yet through all that nonsense, Biden still managed to land 3 or 4 pretty powerful jabs, the sort that have an outweighted influence on people’s memory of the event. Specifically, the Coronavirus situation is what it is (using Trump’s words for it) because you are who you are.

But even beyond the main take of Trump’s performance being one that debased the process, from a strategy PoV it was baffling. He and his team have committed to the idea that Biden is a trojan horse for the extreme left wing of the party in the hope of holding on to the Obama-Trump voters. Yet last night he repeatedly mocked him for losing the left and not being left enough. It is just one example of the utter incoherence of his approach. He doesn’t make any points. He just says stuff.

thought trump undermined his efforts to pink-bait biden into alienating left-liberal base voters by declaring ‘you just lost the left’ (twice, actually). it works better when you don’t say that out loud, champ

i suppose he was trying to frustrate biden personally rather than persuade viewers–which suggests he’d already kinda lost the plot

biden defending the green new deal mere seconds before renouncing it was a bit weird, though

I dont see why. You can argue that campaign promises mean little, but Biden at least has an aggressive climate plan. But it isnt the Green New Deal per se. I think it is reasonable to defend the Green New Deal as an idea and the elements within it while also not wanting to be held accountable for it as a complete policy proposal that isnt yours.

would almost rather biden had stroked out or had his dentures fall out or something

now it’s nailed on that they’re going to try to steal this election in plain sight, shenanigans far beyond the ‘brooks brothers riot’ or any other precedent

The ‘Brooks Brothers Riot’ thing was reactive, this time they are planning the same thing at scale as the basic strategy.

they’re getting their SCOTUS permamajority, and biden is winning with suburbanites who often vote republican, so maybe everyone outside trump’s circle will be happy to cut him adrift–assuming he’s beaten soundly, which seems likely with the stability of biden’s polling leads–& plan ahead for a massacre in the 2022 midterms

It is what is so frustrating me at the counter takes saying “look, Trump is not going to refuse to leave if Biden wins”. It’s like these takes are imaging an election night from previous years that is not going to happen - one in in which the networks call it unambiguously for Biden before we all go to bed. I don’t think anyone is putting that scenario forward, in large part because all the rat fucking is designed precisely to prevent the networks being able to make such a timely call The idea is to use what levers he has available, both within government and without, to prevent such clarity arising, and then using those same levers to declare a win for himself.

trump also blunted whatever impact the hunter biden shit might have had by claiming his idiot grifting children are losing money to work for the country instead

nobody believes that

Just like the Premier League needs a strong Manchester United?

Democracy and good government is best served by voters having more than 1 viable options to vote for. This version of the GOP is not that. I dont see what the problem is with the comment.

I would argue that the strength of Republican Party is not the problem, it’s their strategy, morality that should have been brought to focus by her.

what good have the republicans done in the last 50 years?

reagan was basically a proto-trump, and people like pelosi are determined to distinguish trump both from him and the party itself

it’s west wing brain nonsense, and political malpractice. pelosi’s no different than ilhan omar in the eyes of republican voters, the only people who respond to this–or the constant invoking of john mccain–are blue MAGA cultists, clapping like seals as she drags the party further right into the space vacated by the republicans

and i see zero truly viable options at the moment
