I’m a regular Amnesty International supporter. They make stellar work all over the world to fight the abuse committed by authoritarian governments all over the world. If this report is true, Trump and his cronies, by trying to discredit this organisation, show again the heart- and soulless nature of their ‘business’.

It begs the question of where this anti-semitic bang wagon is going to take us. It’s being used everywhere against organisations and individuals.
Another worrying aspect is what it might do to the term anti-semitic. If supporting freedoms and human rights means your labelled as ‘anti-semitic’ then who in the end is going to give a fuck?

Probably starts with calling it anti-semitic, not anti-semetic.

Apologies, I’ll get me coat…

I am not overly worried about a ‘bandwagon’ based on the thrashing around of Trump’s failing regime. I don’t think the bleach-drinking bandwagon took off either. Anti-semitism has been and will continue to be thrown around as an accusation somewhat carelessly, but I don’t think anyone is particularly buying the charge against Amnesty International et al.

There’s that however on the hand there’s what all this carelessness will do to/for actual anti-semitism. Will it just get shrugged off as another careless usage … and will that be deserved?

No need to get you coat, I make lots of spelling errors and need to be corrected.

Amnesty International has faced this charge for decades, and there is a kernel of truth behind it - they have spent much more time and effort decrying human rights abuses in Israel than say Syria, or any number of Middle Eastern countries with appalling human rights records. I believe the counter there is precisely the opposite of anti-semitism, AI expects better of Israel than they do of Assad. But that is a long, long way from the idea that AI is an organization that systematically works against Israeli/Jewish interests.

Yeah, against a plain dictatorship, there isn’t much you can do as an international organisation.

They have much more scope with democratic countries being under attack by authoritarian leaders, because those can’t allow themselves to appear as dictators. Erdogan’s Turkey has come a lot under their scrutiny lately, and deservedly so. Hungary is another country with a lot of problems lately, Trump’s US, Putin’s Russia, China which proclaims to be a republic etc.

Unfortunately, AI aren’t short of work currently, and Israel is a problematic spot too. But any accusation of anti-semitism is far off. They don’t criticise states because of their religion or their belief, but because they undermine or attack human rights.

Jobs have left, the trade deficit is up and the debt is up. And that was all true pre-covid. If you believe the economic anxiety argument, the one that decoupled the stock market and unemployment numbers from how the general population feel the strength of the economy, then he has failed spectacularly on addressing the supposed concerns of those voters.

he’s a con man with a room temperature IQ who lives in a gilded penthouse, of course he didn’t address any of those problems

doesn’t mean we won’t see the pattern repeated, given biden’s pride in refusing to learn any lessons from the obama era

once trump took office, suddenly the unemployment #s were real, and he took credit for the economy that he inherited, after running against it. but the underlying reality is that the obama economy he inherited was failing most americans

after the tree of life massacre, i believe an israeli official was present at a republican event with mike pence where a messianic jew–a fake jew; a christian by another name–delivered a convocation

trump has repeatedly smashed through ‘tropes’ to explicitly refer to israel as ‘your country’ when addressing american jews, but this particular brand of anti-semitism is compatible with zionism, so you don’t hear a peep from the israel lobby

ben shapiro is a clown, but when he said he didn’t care about ann coulter’s bigotry because she was staunchly pro-israel, imo he was speaking for a lot of people–it’s obvious netanyahu has the same attitude towards people like orban

The support of American evangelicals for Israel is profoundly disturbing, not least for how readily it coincides with genuinely shocking anti-Semitism.

evangelicals were a huge part of brazil electing bolsonaro, another genocide-curious goon who is pro-israel

that US evangelicals are trump’s most loyal supporters while mormons, though culturally quite conservative & reliable GOP voters, have generally kept trump at arm’s length, is a notable difference imo

I suspect the Mormons keeping Trump at arm’s length is influenced by Mitt Romney. Whatever you think of his politics, he seems honorable in standing up to Trump when so many other Republican politicians have kissed his backside and enabled him.

So what does Biden need to do tonight to still somehow lose this? Burn the flag on stage?

If he ends the evening somehow standing in a puddle of his own drool, he might be in trouble. Otherwise, just stand by and let the Angry One do his schtick.
