The Walking Eagle thread

Are the middle classes complacent?

We’ve had over 6 years of debate of whether it was appropriate to call an an open fascist a fascist, and condemnation of anyone who did it. We have had a refusal acknowledge attempts to acknowledge the democratic result of an election, both by violence and institutional fuckery, as being exactly what it was. We have an important part of our nation’s collective consciousness driven by arguments from out of touch NYC and Washington “centrists” making people think that the attempts of MAGA to cancel democracy* is the same as hypothetical Oberlin students (because it’s always Oberlin that gets name checked by these people, despite most the country having never heard of such a small exclusive institution) protesting against perceived hate speech at their school.

You can quibble over whether it is complacency or dishonesty, but there sure is shit is not enough collective acknowledgment that we are facing a drastic and impending threat.

*Note this is just about the 2020 election.

  • In Florida we have De Santis removing elected elections officials in deep blue counties and replacing them with political operatives on the basis of identified voter fraud. These cases they are identifying are largely of ex felons who had been approved by the state to vote and later found to have been ineligible (it is near impossible to know if you actually paid up on the all fines you have to pay get your vote back), and this is being done as an overt threat to other ex-felons to not take the chance to vote next time

  • MI stae assembly just refused to accept a ballot initiative that the citizens did what was necessary to get it on the ballot. They just said no they’re not going to accept it.

Everywhere you look there are moves being taken in our incredibly decentralized democratic system to rig the system

Yes it’s a creeping cancer that goes largely unnoticed while attention is focussed on the magalomaniac and his antics.

Both ring true in equal measure.

His DOJ had a similar issue. There were several awful suits he brought before the court that as awful as they were might have stood up given the power of the unitary executive, but were so badly argued that the court had to dismiss them on procedural grounds not even on the law. And that with his A team in place.

Like DeSantis in Florida, there is speculation that he using government funds to push suits he knows he cannot win as a way of airing grievances and using that politically.

Is this any different to the thousands of legal cases previously brought against him?

Probably not, but you’d hope when it’s the New York Attorney General going after him that she actually has a case against him.

My long held suspicion is that Donald Trump is, in fact, above the law in America. He does what he likes, when he likes, and he hasn’t meaningfully been checked - either via double impeachment while President, or anything else we have seen.

He will probably run for President in 2024, and the NYC business stuff, along with the documents he took to Mar a Lago, and anything else that comes out, will just serve to strengthen his support.

It will all be seen as evidence that his political enemies are just trying to take him down, via dirty means, and that the judicial system is corrupt and the FBI is corrupt.

I hope I am wrong, but I’ve seen this over and over again.

Donald Trump is above the law in America.

Historically there has been an enormous difference between the pool he pretends to swim in and the one he does. He is far more small time than the image he presents and the people he has crossed at that level either dont have the resources to take him on, or realize there is no blood to squeeze out of the stone.

He may now find that in his turn to politics he has flown too close to the sun and too belatedly realized that the NYC AG is not some contractor from Queens he can just walk out of a contract on. He has finally put himself in a situation where people with the power, resources, and wherewithal to hold him to account have been forced to pay attention to him.

if he actually gets convicted, can we call it the “Walking Eagle / Icarus” thread?

That suit is a mess. It’s a civil case that alleges his organization broke NY and federal criminal laws. So why not bring criminal charges? Don’t have the evidence? Just sue his company. Embarrassing and ridiculous.

From the very beginning that details were made public, it was clear it was a civil case that was being pursued. Supposedly this precludes criminal charges (law is weird :man_shrugging:) Basically no one had any reason to suspect anything other than civil charges to come from her office. She has though been clear about her cooperation with other offices who are currently or may choose to investigate criminally (Manhattan DA and FBI).
