Thiago ALCANTARA: 2020/21

I’ve still to see/notice that.

What I would say is I think he needs to become more assertive he appears subdued to me at the moment. When he came on for his first match (all be it a cup game) he took charge of proceedings yet now he is far from asserting himself on the game (I have noticed this with other players under Klopp).
He has the experience and the class to dominate and I feel we are just seeing his shadow at the moment.

Let’s go back and recall a little bit, if Thiago in midfield scares us so much…

Were we afraid when Klopp started one season with Henderson at #6 and had two #8’s in Lallana and Wijnaldum?
When he played Milner for a full season at LB?
When we didn’t sign a proper striker to replace Sturridge as starter but put Bobby in the false 9?
When Trent suddenly started playing so much games?

Let’s not forget that this team evolved, actually made much riskier moves on paper than playing Thiago deeper in midfield and a lot of them worked at the time.

Nah!
When you bring in a player like Thiago the balance is all important imo. Circumstances have just been such that that balance is very difficult for us to achieve at the moment. Our only out as far as I can see is Henderson having a long run in the starting line up (for this season when VVD gets back pressure will drop a lot).
If our attack had been taking their chances we wouldn’t even be discussing this but as they didn’t (take their chances) we have ended up in a hole. Just a matter of climbing out of it (much easiler said than done).

I was scared when Klopp insisted on playing Hendo at LCM and Wijnaldum at RCM, thankfully he got over that.
Honestly though who is scared of having Thiago in the starting lineup where ever Klopp positions him?
We are just going through a difficult time and just need to have confidence in our starters which includes TAA, Rhys, Firmino … when they do start.

When did that happen? Hendo at LCM and Gini at RCM.

When Fabinho started playing at DM regularly.

Pretty sure it was the opposite. It was when Hendo proved to Klopp that he can be a starting #8 for us, that was on the way to Madrid. He was RCM, while Gini pretty much mainly played LCM for us.

I can assure you it happened. If you can not remember don’t blame me.

We sure as hell miss Hendo as RCM currently… Gini was pretty pants v’s Utd really in a defensive sense, if Trent was forward he should have been covering and helping Williams (who was left exposed multiple times).

Maybe in a one off game!

Sure, we miss Hendo in midfield in general, be it at #8 or #6. His influence is great.

No, Klopp kept trying it and it really didn’t work. Eventually Klopp saw sense. I mentionned it often on TIA. I’m not going to argue about it just saying I found that shocking.

Edit: I found it so shocking that I have a tendance to exagerate but that should be understandable. If your trying to defend Klopp, stop it!

Nah, I’m just trying to recall, but I can’t. I remember Hendo almost always at RCM when we went to Madrid with that Fabinho, Hendo and Gini trio. I know Gini played RCM in Kiev, when Millie was LCM (who very rarely played RCM). Before the final, I wanted us to flip it to have Gini on Modric and Millie on Kroos (but then Real rotated Casemiro, our press target, with either of them in the build up, with Isco also helping between the lines as a 4th midfielder). Okay, we’ll leave it there.

Not his job, remember when Hendo played the right side of the midfield 3, with Fab as the 6, who was it that helped and covered Trent when he went forward … Hendo thats why we liked Hendo being in that position. Also when Gomez and Matip play they covered that position with then 6 at times slotting in to the middle of the back for but that happens more in possession than out.

Not saying that as a 6 he won’t be at times out wide but there is no way the 6 can cover in behind Trent and on the flip side in behind Robbo, not physically possible.

Great points and do agree with this he seems the type of player that would be press resistant as he has vision and cannturn with the ball either way.

So you are blaming him for our losses tut tut tut

This is what we miss!!!
His energy, covering and even late runs into the box were/are what we are missing. Thiago isn’t the problem especially defensively as apart from the Man U game we have been relatively tight defensively and against Man U it was the spaces in behind us that killed us + defensive mistakes

Really it was the poor quality of the match that led to all the goals. The neutral would say 5 goals in the NW derby great but any serious analysis should err on the side of poor quality all round. imo of course.

Yes defending wasn’t at its best, but it was good to see a more open game than these teams that just sit back with 111 men behind the ball

Is that… is that allowed?
