To be honest all of his fouls are because he’s been caught out of position slightly and is trying to recover. I put a lot of that down to our general ball retention up front at the moment. The ball is going forward but coming back out so fast no one is set and it’s putting enormous pressure on the team on the whole.
He still needs to time to settle etc.

I thought he had got better last few games to be fair with this yesterday not withstanding

He’s coping with the intensity better but yesterday he took a knock downwards imo Those silly repeated passes to and fro between him and Gini were very frustrating an unconstuctive.

Great shout Noo Noo, he also becomes a little rash when he loses possession, I feel way we sometimes press we overcommit trying to win the ball early and get sidestepped too easily, but that is a trait I see all the time from our players.

I was critical of Thiago against Leicester, however he looked very good against Leipzig, how many times did he win the ball back, people say he can’t tackle, well he certainly knows how to get the ball off the opposition and that for me is all that matters

Carra has defended Thiago in the Telegraph, which is behind a paywall.
Football365 have reported his words - https://www.football365.com/news/jamie-carragher-debunks-two-myths-liverpool-thiago-scapegoat
Some key bits I spotted;
“Yet when breaking down the statistics of his season, some of the most repeated negative appraisals do not add up.
“It is suggested, for example, Liverpool are a more possession-based side when Thiago plays, and he is responsible for slowing the tempo.
“The opposite is true. Liverpool have more possession and complete more passes as a team without him. And far from ‘passing for passing’s sake’ when Thiago starts, the ratio of forward balls, and those finding a teammate in the final third, is significantly higher with the Spanish international.
“Liverpool create an average of two more chances per match when Thiago plays. Of Thiago’s passes, 67 per cent are in the opposition half, and 33 per cent in the final third – more than any of Liverpool’s regular midfielders. He looks forward, not sideways.
Thiago has made more interceptions each match than any of Liverpool’s middle three made in the title-winning campaign of 2019-20. He has won more duels and retrieved possession more than Henderson, Wijnaldum and Fabinho did a year ago.”

Has had some issues but I think he showed on Tuesday what he can do, I was frankly baffled by some of the stuff about slowing down play.

I think Naby and Thiago are perfect for European games. Various factors in the English game kind of blunts their natural abilities.

The whole Liverpool team are perfect for European games due to the strict refereeing that is being enforced. The premier league teams know exactly the tactics to use against us because of how easy it is to con the officials.!

Well I haven’t been making things up in my defence of Thiago
I think he’s being made a scape goat.
Our real issue has been the lack of supply coming from TAA and Robertson. That’s not a slight on those two but more an indication that their contribution to be nullified through our injuries and to some degree the opposition as well I suspect.

I think he had, by far, the best game in Liverpool colors.

Both Gini and Thiago haven’t been doing the business as far as I’m concerned. Defensively both are so easily beaten, attacking wise they are not supporting enough. It needs sorting and is very important as TAA is hanging back more and more (resulting in him only crossing from deep).
I also think we used the pitch better. I’d love to see a compilation of his passes as the impression to me was that he played alot of the same passes he usually does yesterday except the receiver turned towards goal or continued the passage of play up the field rather than lay it off square or play it back.
Those pinged in passes straight up the pitch are beautiful. I hope we are starting to figure out how to incorporate that into our game.

I’ve been probably the most critical poster about Thiagos defensive abilities and Gini also has other qualities but together they’ve been doing ok (especially yesterday).
Quiet evening. Nothing special. And yes, basically they offer not much to our attack atm - but probably that’s the only way we can ‚survive’ without Hendo and Fabinho in midfield.

I think he’s doing well on the ball and offering plenty of creativity but he relies on others to make the most of his passing. He’s the pass before the assist kind of player, a bit like Alonso, not the one who’s always making the final pass. The speed at which he sees and executes the passes forward give the players ahead of him an extra half second on the ball which they’re not currently making full use of.
The ball into Mane was a perfect example on .40. A good drop off the defender from Mane, Thiago fizzes it into his feet, he spins and Firmino is through but Mane mishits the pass. For me he’s been making those passes quite consistently but the front 3 or fullbacks haven’t made enough of them.
When we find some attacking form again I think he’ll win a lot more plaudits as we’ll see these passes ending in goals.

We’ve talked before how certain players are so good that the team should be tweaked to get the best of them. Alcantara falls into that category for me, as long as he’s fit, but I don’t think Klopp wanted to tweak the team because he brought him in but actually the opposite way. I still think that his best role is when he’s the deepest of three midfielders, when the teammates who are nearest to him are not afraid to play his game (get a bit closer, receive the ball into fit, win the pitch yard by yard by passing in around opponents, thus creating space and moving forward).
When I put my thoughts into words, I think they might be interpreted as me wanting Klopp to turn Liverpool into last season’s Bayern - and it might not be too far from the truth - but the likes of Jones and Alcantara (and sigh Keita) are the kind of midfielders who get the best out of fullbacks and wide players that Liverpool currently have. I’m not sure how Fabinho at DM and especially Firmino at CF fit into those plans, Klopp could really use Firmino at his best or the next Kane or Lewandowski since the original ones are already taken.
It’s a shame that this season is a complete write-off from virtually everyone’s point of view, though, but hopefully Alcantara and Jones in particular could use it as a springboard for a successful 2021/22. Meanwhile, I’m sure we’ll see more games after which the “true football men” in media will incessantly heckle Liverpool and especially Alcantara for not being physical enough, for tackling with too much force or not tackling at all. Liverpool can’t win this season and neither can he.

There’s no doubt that Thiago is a class act and his vision and execution are on a higher level. I don’t think it’s fair to judge him too much this season when Klopp and the squad have been fire fighting really and the team he was brought in to play in doesn’t really exist at the minute. Next season if all the bits are repaired and well oiled, particularly that solid commanding back end, i think we’ll see what he’s really made of.

Calmer performance last night.
More pass and move, less “gonna take people on” (which he can, but he needs to do it less) each time.
Still a few needless fouls, although that one on McBurnie (had a shocker last night, looked like on drugs) was never a foul in my opinion.
I’d prefer Gini at RCM and Thiago at LCM when they split to a double six when we attack now (Jones can easily play the right sided #10 as he is as a left one, but Gini would provide better security in spaces between Trent and Mo).
He’ll just get better, as our situation gets better in my opinion. But for sure, we have to bring a Gini replacement this summer.
