Thiago ALCANTARA: 2022/23

No.

It’s a no because we’re not even getting £10m for him - first and foremost.

BS, Barcelona does not even have enough money to contract me … :innocent:

What would be the point of cashing in? We won’t get much and he’s still excellent.

At collecting his wages? Being a nice presence around the squad? Posting periodically on twitter to remind everyone he’s still here? If we can get even close to what we paid for him, I think now is the time to let him go - we need a big midfield overhaul and bringing in 3 quality midfielders without his availability history would be a big improvement on Keita, Ox and Thiago.

If we could do that it would mean not having to play him into the ground every time he comes back from injury and being able to rotate him , thus increasing his availability. He’s too good to let go for peanuts.

He is. He is a wonderful, wonderful footballer.

He is also chronically injury prone. It doesn’t matter how good he is if he is perpetually unavailable.

Sturridge situation here. ‘Too expensive to replace’ Klopp said back then.

We already need two new CMs this summer.

Make that definitely three if Thiago leaves too.

Not happening.

If the interest is real i would be tempted especially if Fabinho and Henderson are staying.

I would hope it would be Fabinho that would be moved on. We are not going to be where we want to be if he is going to play regularly. If I had to choose between Thiago or Fabinho to let go, it would be Fabinho.

It depends where we get the offers. If we get a half decent offer for either, I would sell.

This. Tebas is being pretty clear that registering new players next season is going to be difficult for them with the league’s spending rules. Even without a transfer fee they are going to struggle to bring in someone of his profile.

“The midfielder, 31, was joined by Dani Olmo, Xavi Simons, Arnau Martinez and Sergio Gomez, according to Diario AS.”

What a weird list, I mean, throwing all sorts of different players there.

One would think that Barca would be more in the hunt for a #6, with Busquets leaving at the end of the season. Although I’ve noticed in last weeks and months that Barca’s structure has shifted often more to a double-pivot midfield (with one proper winger and a more half space player on the opposite side). Frenkie could “finally” play deeper where he prefers. Nico Gonzalez didn’t have a great season at Valencia. We’ll see what they do.

As things stand, I think Thiago is closer to stay than leave. He’s been one of the rare good performers this season (yes, not without his weak games and actions) and has a year left. Can certainly see more arguments for other players to leave or play less, than him. I’d like to have him for one more season and to have a new player in his position to rotate with, fight, learn from him while he’s still here, etc. So we can use Thiago more smartly for that final season.

But since we’re increasingly unlikely to make top 4 and who knows if we even make any Europe next season. At this stage of Thiago’s career, if there’s interest from a winning side or more competitive in the short-term, not to mention his boyhood club… there could be a situation where we quickly sit with him and agree to accept a certain offer/fee.

I’m saying this with quite heavy heart but is it time to part ways with him? There were times when I expected him to become a luxury player for us but you can only be that in a successful, functioning side. His fitness record now is dangerously closr to rivaling that of Keita and Lallana… He’ll probably be gone in a year’s time anyway but maybe the club should bring it forward by a year.

Aye it’s a shame.

But he is a luxury, and his injuries and fitness, combined with a lack of actual assists or goals makes him a non starter.

He will no doubt see the evolution that is beginning to take shape, if there is no CL he might opt to move on himself, if a good offer comes in… Either way, he is a good player to call upon if he improves his availability

How? It’ll only get worse. He’s getting older

Progress and evolution has to continue its upward trajectory if we are not going to become toooooo stale. If he stays, the team will be assembled without Thiago being the front-runner of choice… Less dependency upon him, will give him more respite on the sidelines, bigger rest periods between games - hence, his availability to be called upon if needed, should improve
