Iraola has probably been signed with a view to making the most out of youth players. Nyoni could well be the first one to benefit from that, especially as there are a couple of really pressing needs to divert funds into (centre back and right wing).
He seems to have bulked up a bit as well?

Yeah he looked impressive last night and with Iraola I do feel there is a route to the first team.
I actually think this lad is one of the reasons why we suddenly dropped interest in Wharton.

I think the club had expected that to apply to any manager at the club, and is at least in part what led to Arne being relieved of his duties.

His long-range passing skills are still unknown, though.
Until TAA left, we had always have good to great long-range passers in our team since 2000: Gerrard, Alonso, Hendo, Thiago, TAA.
It remains to be seen if Iraola even wants that kind of long-ball passing in the team though. What we did see last night, though, is evidence that Nyoni is already very good at defence-splitting through balls.

Not sure Hendo’s long passing is in the same galaxy as Gerrard, Trent, Xabi.

His long range passing is there in his locker when he chooses to use it, shown it numerous times at youth level for both club and country.
Slot wasn’t really a fan of it, which could be a reason why we didn’t see it much in the last 2 years, then again we haven’t seen much of him at all in the first team.

He doesn’t need the long range passing as I love how he progresses the ball through the zones, to FEET!

As his pass for the goal proved last night he is perfectly good at advancing possession even if he isn’t going to be doing big switches of play.

Really impressing in pre-season, the standout so far for me.
Only question mark would be physicality but that is a question that can’t be answered without game time.

He was looking to play it forward as much as possible and some nice passes through the lines. Good to see. I´d like to see him move it a little quicker and I didn´t see any chemistry with his midfield partner but I thought Szobo´s movement and interplay was very poor and slow, so not really Nyoni´s fault
So far he looks promising and is doing all the right things.
So far I’d suggest he is one of 2-3 players who should be considered for the first team.

Yeah. I’ll repost here what I said in the pre season thread with him being such an outstanding performance on a pretty drab night
Really disappointing game. I’m actually surprised by how negative my reaction was because I’m not normally that guy. Off the ball the difference to last year was stark and that was good to see. In terms of personnel, Trey was an absolute delight in the 6. He’s so confident in how limited a space he needs to still feel comfortable demanding the ball and composed and good enough that he never lost it. But he was more than just a safe outlet, 3 different times he suddenly upped the tempo and started us on a dangerous break forward showing he isn’t just a “hide between the CBs and pass it sideways guy.

Obviously apples and oranges, but I get the same feeling watching Trey this preseason that I did watching Trent’s first proper preseason in the team (when he also was playing CM). Hard to describe, but they both looked equally ready for the first team - combination of confidence, skill, physicality and, for want of a better word, aura. It’s hard to define, just something that makes a young prospect stand out from the rest.
