1981, donât know about our quality or form back then, but we finished 5th that season when we won it in Paris, though also won the League Cup. They finished 2nd, losing the league to Sociedad and 0 trophies.
2009, we were a pretty good team, we could say overall a more complete and competitive side than them. Us as small favourites? We both finished 2nd in the league, we won 0 trophies. They finished 2nd and won the Supercopa.
2014, they were better, both in terms of quality, recent experience and form. Clear favourites. Nothing more to say. We finished 6th and on 0 trophies. They finished 2nd and won the Supercopa and UEFA Super Cup.
2018, we have to say that they were small or normal favourites to win that final. We did really well to even get there. An accumulation of some really bad moments for us that day (3 factors was too much: Salah, Karius and Baleâs goal). Was a pretty even game before/around that, not much in it. We finished 4th, 0 trophies. They finished 3rd, won the Champions League, Supercopa, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
2021, we were in big problems with injuries and players missing. They were clear favourites. We actually displayed a decent fight in the return leg though couldnât score, but certainly better than most expected. We finished 3rd and 0 trophies. They finished 2nd and 0 trophies.
2022, Iâd say we were small favourites. Or it was pretty even. Our performance wasnât the best (wasnât terrible either), but if any team looked like winning 1-0 that day, it was us. They can mostly thank Courtois. We finished 2nd and won the two domestic cups. They won the league, Supercopa and Champions League.
2023, a bit similar to 2021, they were clear favourites. We simply didnât play a good enough season to be able to compete better than the 30 minutes or so in the first game. Real themselves arenât having a great season either, but there are levels to the damages of both sides and simply quality, winning mentality/experience.
But most clubs will often face Real in difficulty. All clubs have their bad seasons or periods, but theyâre obviously in the league of their own in Europe at least.

Wow, I still canât get around my head that Man City may finally win the CL after flagrantly violating both UEFAâs FFP and the FAâs FFP.
If the UEFA and the FA doesnât regulate this shitshow where one team can literally assemble the new version of Galacticos illegally, football will go down the way of Menâs Cycling in the late 90s to early 2000s where there is always the same winner every time for UCL ,PL and the English domestic cups.
The PL will be hit first badly as there is literally no title race left, making the PL the new Ligue 1.
Then the UCL comes next. Imagine Citeh becoming so good that they steamroll every European opposition even at the finals for a few years running where those years that they steamroll others are on the back of getting off severe European sanctions via technicalities. TV ratings ( and the tv money involved) for the finals will surely drop like a damn stone which affects everybody else bar for Citeh.
However, the suits at UEFA and FA are more excited about the crazy influx of money than regulating the game properly off the field

I think that pasting of Real Madrid might end up being seen as a watershed moment. especially if the final against Inter is as one-sided as I expect it to be. At one level, the complaints of Liverpool/ManU/etc fans can simply be dismissed as sour grapes. Premier League teams at the top have lots of money (Deloitte has LFC 3rd in their Money League, behind City and Real). Of the top 10, 6 are PL teams. Other than the duopoly of Spain, the rest are the sole representative of their league (Bayern, PSG) with Juventus not even in the top 10 anymore. There is a reasonable chance that 17-18-19 could all be relegated from the PL this year!
The signal that sends to the rest of European football is awful. Giant clubs in big leagues like AC Milan, Dortmund and Atletico are really also-rans now, while most of the clubs have no hope of even that. If you donât have petrodollars, you need to be in the PL to have any real hope unless you are one of the few designated ânational championsâ, and even then your hopes wonât hold up against a PL side backed by petrodollars.

No way Dortmund and Athletico are giants but I agree with the general gist of your point.
You can be 3rd in the list but if youâre way behind first and close to 4th and the rest, it doesnât make a lot of difference.
I like Real taking a hammering, just a shame it was by those cheats.

By revenue, we are actually now quite close. The difference is for LFC, revenue > expense every year. Citeh has built up enormous value in their playing staff over years of running losses (and losses that are almost certainly larger than stated)
