UEFA Champions League (Part 1)

Is Sahin the worst manager in Dortmund history?

It was disgusting the way they provoked leverkusen and won by submission and their manager seem to enjoy all the chicanery horrible football.
I hope Liverpool avoid them they have some cracking players but a rotten manager imo.

Very interesting read (link below) about the new financial incentives of the Champions League this season.

For their last game, Barcelona face Atalanta who need to win to make sure they get a chance at top 8.

So winning top spot just gives us an extra 226 600 over second place.

It looks that way, and from what I can tell, even though we know the teams who finish first or second in the league phase will face a team who finishes in 15th, 16th, 17th or 18th, I think (but not certain) that there is some kind of draw after the final games to decide which of the possible two play off winners we get.

Hey - that would pay a few days of Trent’s increased wages! It might be the difference between keeping him and losing him.

I read elsewhere that because a draw is worth 500k instead of 1.8 million, then the remaining money is put to a general pot and redistributed to all teams based on their final league position. (Where the last team get X amount, the penultimate gets X2, the first one gets 36X, etc.)

So the difference will be a tiny bit more. No idea if it’s consequential and I don’t really care to calculate.

Yes, I think that is true, I believe they mentioned something about it in this article.

There were two other penalties given in the game that were way softer than that one. I think they would review it if Raphinha didn’t score but once he does they think “We dont want to be the ones who change this result”.

The referee was all over the place.

Easier to figure out with a snapshot.

So Liverpool get 15.7m + (1.8m * 8) + 1.7m + 9.3m(for qualification to round of 16) = 41.1m

I do think there should be a further money being given out for teams to finish in the top in the league stages.

Makes it slightly complicated. There are 32 draws so far , assuming we’ll end up with 45 draws as the tournament goes on. That’s an additional 0.8m per draw that goes on to being redistributed to teams based on final league position. Another 36m or so the estimate goes. Could be more.

Not so simple math gives the additional payout to be around 2.4m for the first placed team.

No matter what way you slice it, the additional revenue from this stage of the comp - when you add gate receipts, merchandise, TV money, ad revenue, prize money, etc. - is going to come in REALLY handy for us this summer as we load up for a decade of dominance after City get fucked out the League and Arsenal go down in flames.

I agree, there doesn’t seem to be much of an incentive or a reward for finishing top of this League Stage. Yes, we get slightly more money than the team that finishes 8th, it is debatable whether the draw is going to be any kinder to us for finishing top, so the incentive either needs to be a huge amount of money, or some other kind of reward… I am not sure exactly what that could be,

Maybe, it should be something very left field like the winners get automatic entry to the quarter finals … or even better, they can nominate a qualified team of their choice to get relegated to the Europa League … as long as that team name begins with either a ‘M’ or a ‘R’ !

Yeah we might even be ending up facing a stronger team based on the luck of the draw. We might even end up facing a PSG/Madrid/City/Bayern depending on how the matches pan out.

I think the top 3 should be getting additional incentives of 10m , 7m and 5m. Or something along those lines.

It was @Arminius’ fault for helping to develop David.

This is really phenomenal what we’ve done in this new format, coming back to the CL after a year out of it. 7 wins against 7 different opponents, conceding 2 goals. Very impressive. Not taking it for granted. Really proud of it.

Also very profitable. I found this online:

Play-off round: €4,290,000
Base fee for league phase: €18,620,000
League phase victory: €2,100,000
League phase draw: €700,000
League phase top 8: €2,000,000
League phase ranked 9 through 16: €1,000,000
Knockout round play-offs: €1,000,000
Round of 16: €11,000,000
Quarter-finals: €12,500,000
Semi-finals: €15,000,000
Runners-up: €18,500,000
Champions: €25,000,000

I make it that we have so far accumulated
€18,620,000 + 7x€2,100,000 + €2,000,000 = €32,320,000

There are a fair few top players wages in there. Just qualifying for the group stage is a year’s worth of Salah,

Which serves to underline just how ridiculous players’ wages are, really.

How does this actually get enforced in a free movement region of Europe?
