UEFA Champions League (Part 1)

We are going to face one of 15-18, depending on the draw and the first round.

What you are missing is that there is no re-seeding after each round. We face the winner of a 15/16 v 17/18. The assumption is that the seeds hold, so 23/24 can capture the 9/10 track that takes them to face the 7/8, with the original logic being that the 7/8 get the strongest match-up, 1/2 the weakest.

This explains it very well and is up to date so shows all the possible teams, every team can face if the table stays as it is now. As things stand, we would face either Bayern. Juventus, Madrid or Celtic.

I think you have to create a free ‘The Athletic’ account to view it.

Thanks @arminius that’s what I was after. While it may seem counter intuitive, I actually think that’s fairer in the top 2 than reseeding.

Can you nerds STFU and just let me know if Pep is happy, proud, or both?

“So, so proud” surely?

This makes it easier to understand.

Long story short. Seeds 1/2 face 2 teams who’s positions are 15,16,17,18.

City can’t reach to 18th position in the league with their current points haul

Arminius explained it nicely and saved having to go to the source, thanks!

I would tweak it with further financial incentive for a higher finish in the group stage.

It would also give a secondary benefit of some of the giant clubs taking it a bit more seriously throughout. There is too much margin for error, so we’ve seen a few of them stumble along. There hasn’t been enough disincentive to stop them from finishing way lower than their true level, so we might get some tasty ties that are way too unlucky for the teams who took the league stage a bit more seriously.

I don’t understand why they wouldn’t re-seed after the playoff round so that the 1st place team plays the lowest remaining seed.

I think I was in the minority in the early days of the CL restructure announcement as I quite liked the concept and still do. The group stages for me have been much better than the old system - no LFC success bias. There seems to always be a couple of big guns playing and therefore a little more interesting in my opinion.

But I am still a bit reserved about the knock out rounds. Top 8 absolutely an advantage but need to be convinced finishing 1st or 2nd is that much more beneficial than 7th or 8th.

And do Real really give a shit if they come 24th or 20th or 16th? They cruise most games locally so are an extra 2 CL games that bad for them compared to City/Villa?

I guess we can review at the end of it all…but maybe irrelevant after LFC win it.

For those still struggling to picture the draw and KO rounds

The draw determines which team from the ranked pair which which in the play off round, and from there on it’s a settled bracket.

This shows if city qualify in 23 or 24th position we could still get them in the QF depending on which side of the bracket we’re both drawn on

I think we might draw City in the QF if we stay 1st and they qualify 24th. If we do 1st and they do 23rd , they’ll get lumped in with the 2nd seeded team which is Barca as of now.

Unless there’s a draw happening there to further decide where individual teams are placed.

And also , Celtic doing rather well to remain in the league. After being whacked 7-1 by Dortmund , they’ve done pretty well. That’s the only loss they’ve had.

Thanks @Limiescouse I didn’t realise the entire path is known like a Tennis draw. Beats those boring events after each round that drag on for ages before a few spinning balls are drawn out. Or do I still misunderstand?

I’m still curious what are the criteria for determining the seedings

2or1, 24or23 etc…
Will this be done based on countries to reduce the likelihood of direct clashes/done randomly or by some other method?
