UEFA Nations League

We dont want a biannual world cup. To help keep that idea at bay we’re going to do a cup of the world in the in between years.

Hendo not in the nations league squad - happy days, albeit if he’s disappointed that sucks. He’s put a lot into this season and will prob benefit form a rest.

Trent is in.

Other notable inclusions - Bowen, Tomori and Abraham. Good to see Southgate continuing to mix it up and bring in players doing well

Seems Southgate clarified it, slightly gutted to see Thiago back was hoping he would just have to concentrate on his club form from now on.

In other news, Jota not in the Portugal squad.

What is this thread?

Good to hear, saw no Minamino in the Japan squad and Fabinho only played 15 minutes this afternoon, Becker on the bench.

Guess Firmino is somewhere on the beach :ok_hand:

Doesn’t look like he went to be fair.

How come no games on tv.

Premier Sports out bid the traditional channels, bar C4 which have got the English games.

I got offered a special deal from my La Liga subscription.

Yeah, I still don’t really understand what this is, to be honest. Feels like it’s too late to ask.

The nations league is a pointless tournament that UEFA set up to drain players even more.

Tsimikas seems to have a kit about four times too big for him.

So it would fit me … :innocent:

Show some respect please.

It’s the international equivalent of the legendary Simod Cup. Once it gets a few years under it’s belt, it will then be worthy to get sponsorship from Zenith Data Systems. What’s more exciting then the race for third to avoid relegation to League B?

Actually, I’ll tell you. The beautifully scheduled extra play off games for those who finish bottom in their groups assigned to League C, in order to avoid relegation to the fabled League D.

Speaking ahead of the 2022 Champions League final, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admitted he was “not in such a good mood” with UEFA because of the Nations League, which he said the organisers should “kick out”.

Who is this Jurgen Klopp? Sacrilege! Let’s hear from someone with no such bias.

England manager Gareth Southgate, whose side reached the inaugural finals with a thrilling comeback win over 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia at Wembley Stadium, is a fan of the Nations League.

“I think there’s a real buzz about it because the top level teams want competitive games and the teams in the other leagues get a realistic challenge too,” Southgate said when the competition began.

It will be truly awful if Robertson and Trent have to play significant mins.

When the Nations League came about, I read a bit to try to understand the format and so on. It didn’t stick, and so I’m going with my initial assessment.

It’s a bunch of balls. Too much football for players that are already overplayed.

Just taking our boys as an example, they fought hard on four fronts for Liverpool, playing every game possible. I’ve no problem with International commitments for the World Cup or Euro (or equivalent for other continents) but adding the Nations League just feels like the third tier European club competition, the Europa Conference League.

It’s a booby prize. The players should be on their hollybobs, relaxing on a beach somewhere, recharging.

This nonsense grates.

Nations League would be great if it totally replaced World Cup Qualifiers instead of being a bizarre grafted-on appendage to it.

Don’t really follow this shit (speaks volumes I’d rather watch BGT than this) but how does Konate not get called up for France yet Varane & Kounde starts?

Fucking Deschamps.

He’s better off on holiday in Greece.

I think the idea of the Nations League is solid if, and only if, the football calendar is significantly reduced

It’s a shame internationals have lost most of their cachet and one solution (which will obviously never happen with the way football drifted since the CL) would be to mandate 18 team max divisions (34 league games), no secondary domestic cups and CL/Europa etc competitions strictly two legged knockout with no more than 64 clubs in each and no seeding after the first round. In such a utopia(?) International ‘friendlies’ would also go with 8 weeks of every calendar year carved out - in blocks no shorter than 2 or 3 weeks and synced up globally - devoted to qualifying or playing in WC/Euros/Nations league etc

Away from the nostalgia of my early world cup (and euro) memories and back in the real world, yeah I’d agree the NL as the new kid on the block further flogging already burnt out athletes is not going to help.
