Also as I have traveled the UK in work, I have found northerners, midlanders, Welsh and Scots more alike and prone to get on, with the exception of the south and south-west which seem to have a whole other type of social norm going on; they dont speak as much to ‘public’ there seems to be less mixing and more distance, especially when you are about to ask to borrow a few quid. Southern England is commercial in the narrow sense.

Funny you mention the south west as most there come from the Midlands.

No. The managed decline was a policy suggestion from some dickhead minister that she rejected.
It’s constantly been wrongly attributed to her. It fits with her being an ‘evil witch’ though, I guess.

Well that’s 2 things I’ve learned today. The second was that I’m a really long way off the fitness levels and weight I want to be at.
While I’m happy to concede the point on Thatcher that episode does highlight the views of Liverpool by certain politicians at the time and again that imbalance between London, in particular and other parts of the UK.

As a side Wales spends 50% or so of its budget on health care. And it isn’t enough sadly.
You can’t spend enough on health care. A base level of care to cover emergency and common complaint conditions (hips, cancer etc) cost X. Pioneering surgery to cure really esoteric conditions costs whatever the budget will allow.
Pretty sure we’ve had similar conversations previously. One issue in Wales is resource levels. There just isn’t enough. This is probably down to a mix of simply not being able to find those resources. Another is existing resources being run ragged which then leads to retention issues.
I have friend in the Ambulance service and the things he has to deal with are crazy. They then pass this onto A&E. In some instances that isn’t necessary but that is what they have to do.
Sorry but this is the first I have heard of this; are you saying Wales has to pay for its own NHS service out of its budget, and these services are not paid out of central funds?

Correct, health care is devolved in Wales, as is education, but it is run in the same manner as in England, health boards etc.
But of course it doesn’t end there. I strongly suspect that if you had a condition that required specialist treatment, the likelihood is that may not be available within Wales and you would therefore be referred to somewhere in England. I then think that your local health board would have to pay the English one for your treatment. This is obviously a more acute problem in North Wales.
For clarity it can also work that if you were in North Wales and referred for treatment in South Wales there would again be a “bill” paid from north to south. It’s just that in north it sometimes makes more sense to be referred to places like Liverpool.
I personally don’t like the way the NHS finances are modelled, but I honestly cant come up with a viable alternative either. If you have a hospital using up resources on a patient from outside their area then those costs should be covered but I suspect there’s profit etc. built into it.
