UK Politics Thread (Part 1)

Hopefully it’s lessons in how to be the ultimate stuntman…

I have highlighted Allison Pearson before. Telegraph writer who holds various distasteful/libertarian views.

Well she has outdone herself today. She took umbrage to one twitter user (a scientist). Threatening to destroy his career. She then went on In a series of tweets to disclose who he is, where he works, said she was contacting his employer, and take legal action.

All the while the scientist apologised again and again. For saying she was part of a hate campaign against the NHS.

She has come across really badly. Not just someone that holds horrible views but a bully.

Decided to stick this here but if people think it’s more appropriate on another page then no problem.

Didn’t the company that make Football Manager have this effect modelled a couple of years ago?

Not sure but I have a vague memory of reading something along the lines of changes arising from Brexit. I’ve not seen anything since to be honest and I couldn’t really say what needs to happen now.

That said simple logic dictates that if you erect a barrier to people moving to work in the UK then signing players from elsewhere in the world become more difficult.

Again it seems that common sense is not that common.

Fixed it for you.

Well I didn’t want to look like I was picking on anywhere in particular.

To be fair, the effect is about the same, given the remarkable ability of talented Brazilians and Argentinians to discover Portuguese and Italian grandparents.

Just came across this fascinating article. While its obviously about Wales and in particular my part of the world I think the same kind of analysis can be applied to other parts of the UK. It seems to link with our previous discussion on the UK being London centric and could extend to HS2

Interesting. In my country, if you are traveling from Dhaka (capital) to Chottogram (the second biggest city and the biggest port) in south by train, you will spend 1-2 hours travelling north. Because historically the main rail link was between the tea producing Sylhet (in north-east) and Chottogram.

However, I wouldn’t blame the colonial rulers much, since we morons haven’t managed to build a link/loop in last 50 years.

I bought an LP from Belgium the other day - just had a message from the seller saying he cant send it at the moment as UK isn’t anywhere to select on postage forms due to Brexit. He said he is checking it every day but reckons it will be mid Jan before he can send it.

Compared to what happened at Capitol Hill last night, UK seems like an island of tranquility.

Which one of you miserable lot complained

£300k for the statue and £100k for the unveiling party, isn’t it surprising how the money is available for this.
Must have been “donations” from @Mascot

Absolutely hate statues and monuments anyway, never mind one of Thatcher. I suppose the irony that a statue of the ‘iron lady’ if construed of metal, would be a sculpture, is wasted on them.

I’d certainly be willing to offer a donation, but I’m not sure it would be one they’d appreciate.

I didn’t think you would :grinning:

Don’t you agree it’s a ridiculous waste of money.

I know a little on this Thatcher story as it’s not a new story. This was doing the rounds in November last year I think. it was originally proposed to erect the statue in Westminster but was considered to be be at too high a risk of vandalism so Sth Kesteven has taken it on. I think the £100k is from donations but I cannot vouch for the £300k for the statue itself.

it’s also being slammed from a perspective of creating a gathering when in reality we shouldn’t be doing anything of the sort.

Well, a gathering raises certain assumptions. Like, are there any Thatcherites still alive. So this is a good thing, at least we’ll be able to see who they are.

Men, to your nests!
