UK Politics Thread (Part 1)

Forgive me but I think a link and some level of explanation would help the conversation rather than lobbing a hand grenade and closing the door.

Don’t get what?

You keep saying remain supporters don’t get it? Get what?

The reasons why 52% of voters voted leave? There are lots of reasons, surely. But very, very, very of them voted to leave for the same reason as you.

You’re right…except it’s trending on Twitter so there isn’t one single tweet. It comes from a poll which has been reported in the Guardian so here’s a link to that:

The vast majority of people commenting are saying

2/3rds of the British public are:
Fucking morons
Racists
Xenophobes
Cunts

etc.
:man_facepalming:

Really harsh to say 2/3 of people are racists and xenophobes. I’m sure a few of them are just concerned about national sovereignty being undermined by ever closer ties with Europe.

Can I agree with the fucking morons bit in isolation?

Possibly, where are you going with this? :joy:

My point was that this just forced the reactionary twats out in force…straight to the usual tropes that people who want to end freedom of movement are automatically stupid and/or racist. How about the possibility that they want to end freedom of movement because that itself is indirectly racist?

When you look at the poll, the majority of respondents said that they wanted immigration to be neither easy nor difficult for everyone, regardless of nationality. That the vast majority of respondents wanted the immigration system to be “fair”.

But yeah…2/3rds of them are stupid and/or racist. Most of those commenting in that fashion really could do with a mirror.

No where. It just appealed to my childish and mischievous sense of humour. I am a simple creature. (awaiting the obvious response to this)

That poll seems to cover a huge amount of ground. Not 100% sure to make of it all to be honest but I’m not surprised that the “morons” are out in force. To me that seems to be norm with pretty much most things these days. We are a heavily divided and polarised society now. I’ll have to power nap and digest it some more I think.

Interestingly, Just listening to a radio phone where someone from the US called in and highlighted the same issue but in this instance related to the US response to COVID-19 and Trump’s views on it. It has literally driven a wedge through society which is now transferring to other issues, including the election.

No it didn’t it compared 2 EU countries (France and Poland) with 2 commonwealth countries (Pakistan and Australia) there wasn’t any comparison to countries with no ‘relation’ to the UK. So peop^le feel EU should be treated like common wealth. Any other interpretation can not be made as the info just isn’t there.

That’s a fair observation. There’s hope for you yet. I used the phrasing that the Guardian and the report itself used but I will rephrase.

The majority of respondents said that they wanted immigration to be neither easy nor difficult for everyone coming from the four countries named in the survey (2 EU and 2 non-EU) irrespective of the nationality of the immigrants from those four countries (France, Poland, Australia and Pakistan).

A couple of questions. Controversial perhaps.

Is immigration actually a problem or is the perception that immigration an issue that’s the problem?

Also do, people believe that this is an example of a typical Tory government cycle? Small government, dont get involved, create an issue on which to sell future small government policies and secure staying in government for the next cycle.

Never knew that Manchester covers 2/3rd of British public.

Not really, multiple studies have shown that immigration makes an overall net benefit to the country.

Most problems that lead to people blaming immigration - like not being able to get a doctors appointment - are actually the result of 40 years of neo-liberal hyper capitalism eroding those services.

Anyway, never miss an opportunity to post my favourite bit of stand up ever. Worth it just for 6:34.

BlockquoteIt was apparent that Corbyn was piss poor leader who made numerous strategic errors.

corbyn’s gone, but they’re still using him to smear people on the left by mere association with him. i think the tactics employed to get rid of him are more instructive than his failures–particularly on brexit, though i know this is a UK politics thread

used to be able to find those entire episodes on youtube or dailymotion, not any more

I mostly agree that immigration is overall a benefit to the UK. Unfortunately, the immigration debate often gets hijacked and portrayed to be about Race - which is an entirely different question in it’s basic form.

I have more concern regarding over-population - since 2001 the population has grown from 59 million to 67 million. If that increase were to continue for another 20 years we will be looking at a population of 75 million by 2040. 8 million people in 20 years, is by any measure, a huge increase to try and accommodate in a very short space of time. Especially considering that in relative terms the UK is about the size of a postage stamp.

I think less than 10% of the UK is built on. The issue is not a lack of space but lack of investment in housing and infrastucture over the last 40 years.

It is not so much about buildings - more about being able to provide adequate services ( schools, hospitals, GPs, social care etc) and about being able to affordably travel around the country in a timely manner. If you just build more roads then more cars will fill them.

Population growth on this scale is unprecedented - excluding after WW2

The effect this has on the Environment and on welfare such as Pensions is enormous.
