UK Politics Thread (Part 1)

This is the problem. His pathological looseness with the truth goes unreported. It’s unacceptable for media outlets to not cover it on the basis that the ‘public don’t care’. It’s the media’s job to report the news, not editorialise on the basis of a self fulfilling prophecy.

Mind you, even the Mail and Telegraph are running the covid comments stuff. Could be really damaging, that one.

Absolutely spot on - it is the media’s job to report the news and it should be factually accurate.

The media (including social media) are deliberately failing to report that which does not fit their political narrative.

Personally I do not care if Boris goes. To be replaced by whom?

An honest, trustworthy, morally strong, intelligent, caring politician capable of unifying and leading the country?

Show me one of any political persuasion - just one. They are an extinct species - the last one - Tony Benn - died in 2001.

I already know this dance though. The Conservatives will plan the announcement that holidays to Spain, Portugal, Greece will be open around the same time as the outcome of all of this. The public will turn a blind eye to the bad deeds of the recent past . “Let’s put all that behind us and look to the future”. Spoiler alert: The Conservatives will do this again.

That’s how this plays out. If there’s one thing the Conservatives excel at, its manipulating the public. If they put even half that sort of effort into strong, honest governance they would actually be a formidable force!

Why are PMs allowed an annual budget of £30,000 to spend on refurbishment costs? That’s absurd, surely.

Ok, going by Johnson’s four predecessors the two Labour incumbents maxed out on this allowance whereas Cameron and May spent on average less than half of it What is Boris Johnson's flat refurb like - and how much did previous prime ministers spend? | Politics News | Sky News but why such a high allowance at all?

They’re basically tenants, not owners. Bring your own furniture, slap on some paint, change the toilet seats and get on with running the country. Fuck’s sake.

I do, however, care about where money over and above the allowance comes from. The Blairs own pocket? Fair enough. A gift or loan from an influential donor? No, fuck off.

That’s resigning territory for me. But then I’m torn. If Johnson resigns just as the vaccination effort nears completion and the economy rebounds, he’ll cast himself as some Greek tragic hero denied his earned glory by the envy of lesser mortals…he probably already has someone in mind.

He’d love such an easy “out”. Delivered Brexit, saved the country from spiralling covid deaths, stopped from continuing his great work all because of a row over wallpaper. Any mess that follows will be because he’s no longer there, not because of any of his policies that might have caused it.

In a way I want him to own his own mess but equally why should we have any confidence he’s the person to clear it up? Horrible choices.

PMQs should be fun. Should being the operative word. Might is more likely though.

How many times will Bozo say “Captain Hindsight” today? My bet is on at least twice.

“I’ll leave it there (here) for now”

Talk about striking when the iron’s gone stone cold. KS needs to watch highlights of the Australian cricket team from the 90s and listen to interviews with Langer, Slater, Border and the Waugh brothers. When you’re up, you stand on the opponent’s throats. Boris already ahead on this debate.

This should be interesting :scream:

I guarantee it will be someone who is even more of a nutcase. That’s the way it goes in NI.

Foster quit as a majority of DUP party have lost confidence in her. One of the issues that she has gone too far on was abstaining in a Stormont vote last week on a motion to outlaw gay conversion therapy. She was expected to vote against.in line with the party anti-gay ethos (it’s not our own opinion, it’s an abomination according to the bible didn’t you know). The DUP tabled an amendment to exempt religious interventions but this didn’t carry (apparently there are gay ‘exorcisms’ carried out here). Some of the callers today on the local phone-in radio show were outrageous. One middle-class sounding lady saying Arlene lost her when she shared a stage with a gay person last year.
Foster’s successor will be a hard-liner for sure.
