Really? I’ll have to give it a read - though I haven’t finished reading a (serious) book since my children came about…so maybe I’ll get back to you in 12-13 years when they’re safely in the foreign legion or in a job.
Looks like the UK got the idea of pushing migrant boats back from the EU…
I mentioned that we should build the wall but apprently that is an unoriginal idea and maybe that is just too simple.
Maybe we should let the asylum seekers in and just shoo them on - now the bridge to Northern Ireland makes sense - I mean, other countries do similarly, i.e. Belarus, Turkey, France (as has been mentioned/insinuated)… so maybe we should do the same!
Are you seriously taking that view?
No. What Frontex is doing is many times worse.
Only because Patel hasn’t started yet.
She wants it passed into law remember.
She also wants to enter a room without turning sideways.
Some things just aren’t going to happen.
Um my mind is now thinking of all the various ways and reasons why that might be. I might have nightmares tonight.
Government plans to combat HGV driver shortage by giving licences to under 16s
Government plans to recruit pensioners to pick fruit
Government plans to remedy low quality of politicians by outsourcing cabinet positions to the highest bidders.
You read it here first
Thought they were already doing that
You forgot children to clean chimneys.
Dont anyone dare suggest Rees-Mogg wouldn’t approve
Maybe having a driving licence is one of those pesky regulatory barriers that the brexiteers were so keen to get rid of?
We just wanted them to be bent and OUR shade of yellow.
It’s all about connections.
Most of my career, I basically had to apply for say 20 or 30 jobs advertised online or in newspapers. You might get invited for an interview for one or two, and then if you have a 50:50 chance depending in how you do in an interview. I have just turned 40, and my workplace is somewhat imploding. However for the first time in my life multiple people are approaching me offering jobs (4 offers in last month). None jobs I applied for.
That’s the biggest difference. I am 40 before doors are opening for me. Many in parliament had doors opened from day one. That’s why many of them studied the classics, history or philosophy. Subjects most tend to avoid because they want a job afterwards.
The PM studied the classics, got a 2:1. But family connections got him job at the Times. When he got fired from there, he used school connections and got a job at the Telegraph.
It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Many politicians performed average at University, landed good first jobs, and leveraged connections.
It’s no wonder that cronyism is rife within the party. It’s how many have progressed in their own careers. The PPE scandal highlighted this.
The schools don’t cause this but I think the reality is you don’t pay for the top schools for the education you pay for the connections your child will make.
Are you saying you dont blame them for being born into a situation and making the most of it? becuase its pretty much what your doing now given the oppurtunity?
Continuing on my read through this thread, it’s nice to see that this actually aged well…
There is a slightly more insidious take on this, that the elite within the elite have specific compromising rituals for the societies they want to be part of. This ensures there are all locked together in networks of mutual embarrassment and ridicule.
There is a reason Cameron was forced to put his dick in a pig by the rest of the bullers. They might need a favour at some point.
The scandal for a lot of these toffs wasn’t that Cameron put his dick in a pigs head. It was that Ashcroft broke ranks on it.
I think it’s fair to say that the inclination to form relationships within your own personal circles etc. is pretty normal.
What isn’t right about it is where these people take up positions where they represent and mange large sections of society. How can they know, understand and sympathise with people that are in different circumstances to them? To me it’s scandalous that they dont seek to understand the differences and challenges. They seem to be happy to stand on your head to keep themselves above water. For me that is an aspect of their upbringing and education that is completely screwed up.
Call it snobbery of you like because to me a lot of it is about maintaining and growing the divide that keeps them in that group where they feel superior.
I agree in principle though cronyism isn’t confined to the elite/rich - we have people like Corbin that seem equally ready to step on heads to fit their agendas and unable to show empathy. I guess his is also a type snobbery…
