UK Politics Thread (Part 1)

BBC pretty crap on that one not giving a link to Johnson’s letter they say was published.

Extracts are now in the article as it’s being updated in real time given it’s breaking news.

Yes, but it’s an objectively true fact that before Doctor Who was a woman there was no crime.

In all seriousness, this isn’t a random lunatic comment from a nutcase MP. It’s a calculated, deliberate strategy from the right. Both here and in America.

Stoke a culture war. Make people angry and trivial shit like female ghostbusters and a black James Bond. Detract from the real reasons crime is going up and access to public services is going down.

A normal and very tame response by France to such a non diplomatic public intervention. Who advised Johnson to publish such a letter on twitter? Trump?

It’s a ridiculously petty reaction from France. People are fucking dying! You don’t break off talks to try and tackle this over a fucking letter.

Absolutely incredibly irresponsible and dickish response.

You’ll not be surprised that I think Wales should look seriously at independence. Unlikely to happen but I would certainly welcome someone to have a serious look at it. I honestly think the thought of it has certain sectors of the UK absolutely crapping themselves if it were to happen.

Anyhow on the transport links, yes and no is my answer. As far as roads there are a couple of real hotspots that need to be addressed such as the Brynglas tunnels near Newport but that’s been on the cards for so long and recently cancelled again. There’s a couple of other spots as well. I know a few along the A55 for example (one of which is due to happen shortly) as well BUT we really need to consider these carefully. Brexit has completely changed the normal freight routes from the Welsh ports linked to Ireland. That needs to be resolved and settle down along with a review on the environmental aspects of it.

Rail in Wales was hit hard in the Beeching cuts. I would certainly welcome work on a North South route. Yep, you cannot travel directly from North Wales to Cardiff at the moment. That would then offer better East West connectivity as well.

here’s a quote from the article
"A Welsh government spokesperson said: "Regrettably the UK government has not shared the report with us so we’re unable to comment."

This is typical of Johnson who under his Torygraph umbrella still considers Wales a Principality. Worth also noting that Johnson’s record on delivering major transport links and infrastructure is at best poor.

Didn’t he deliver crossrail?

At its height it was the largest infrastructure project in Europe.

Looking forward to using it in 2053.

:upside_down_face:

I think I am right in saying that you cannot travel, by rail, from North Wales to South Wales without entering England?
This was designed purposely, in order to get the coal out of Wales and into the rest of the UK in the most economical way possible.

Or did I dream that?

I agree but this is a UK problem.

The solution is an incredibly easy one that can only be achieved through working with France but the UK government seems hell bent on making France the enemy for all the evils of our own inability to actually govern. this is Brexit in action. People dying is the direct result of the UK government not addressing the issue and taking the lead on it because they cant be seen to be working with a member of the EU. They try to place the blame at France’s feet instead.

Do we see France blaming Italy for migrants crossing the Italian France border?

That is if humans and earth are still around

Is there still a border there between two countries in the Schengen area?

Not sure how big a part he played in that, but I thought it wasn’t due to open until next year?

Only cost an extra £1.1bn at the last estimate.

As London Mayor he oversaw the main part of the construction.

On the negative side, he also brought in bendy buses!

But also ‘Boris bikes’.

So some wins and some losses when it comes to transport projects, but I’d say overall he’s well in credit on these issues.

That’s not a lot. Dido wouldn’t even get out of bed for that…

100% correct. You either have to take a stopping service via Chester, Crewe, Shrewsbury, Hereford etc. or travel to Birmingham for a faster train.

If you look at a rail map of England you will see that everything is basically directed to London.

The Road map is pretty much the same with all the major arteries going to London.

You’re right that the rail lines were predominantly built for freight services. Coal in the South, Slate and other minerals in the North. That transitioned more towards passenger services, and then Beeching happened. Tryweryn also happened (disgusting) which killed another rail line.

Absolutely not true. This issue has got worse following the EU rejecting the UK’s proposal to continue applying the Dublin protocol.
