UK Politics Thread (Part 1)

Haha just been trying to figure out the family tree scratching my head.

Matt Hancock was a child from a second marriage. After that marriage broke down his mum married someone else (her 3rd marriage).

That third husband, also had a wife previously.

That previous wife, then married a bloke called Derek who sadly, passed of Covid.

DEREK! Of course, what a tragic loss for Matt. Derek was like a second cousin three times removed, for Great Aunt Mable. Heā€™s the 213th such loss to Covid that Hancockā€™s personally suffered already this year. I donā€™t know how he does it but heā€™s shown such incredible strength and fortitude, for all of us.

FFSā€¦people out there have suffered real personal loss this year. For this twat to even insinuate heā€™s shared in such loss is a cuntā€™s move.

Iā€™m still fascinated how parts of the British media apparently frame this as all about fish andā€¦some ā€˜other issuesā€™.

Itā€™s all about the fish!

Apparently the fish caught in UK waters the ā€˜Britishā€™ donā€™t eat so itā€™s THE export product.
I always wondered why the fish at the mongers wasnā€™t fresh.
We just eat shit here in France like Herring, Lobster, Crab and Coquilles whilst the British tuck into Cod and Haddock from far away corners of the ocean called international waters or something.

Your right itā€™s just one issue at a time for those nincompoops, they can not handle multiple issues at the same time which is of cause why this is taking so long. Fancy starting something you have no plan for. Oh shit! that reminds me of the Macron Government. Thankfully Hollande had set out the issues over Brexit before completely cocking up. :grinning:

Thatā€™s basically Government Brexit policy, so far as Iā€™m led to believe. Donā€™t worry about. Itā€™ll probably be OK.

It wonā€™t be OK.

Bonus points for using this excellent word. :+1:

This is my point. They promised both. Full control of waters and selling the product. A product that the UK doesnā€™t use.
A blind man could see that was always going to be a sticking point.

If they dont get access the Uk fishing industry suffers. If they do that will come at the cost of access and they canā€™t sell that.

Interesting reply by a Robert Colvile on that thread although i suspect his thoughts dont actually consider going WTO combined with a poor Covid response.

I personally think that the outcome as at 1st January will be ā€œNo dealā€¦for nowā€ and talks will just continue until itā€™s sorted.

Whether that means WTO from 1st January or an extension of the transition period I donā€™t know. It would seem absurd to temporarily go to WTO if thereā€™s a chance that a deal can be ratified within the first few months of 2021. So thatā€™s probably what will happen cos, you know.

I donā€™t know if an extension to the transition period can be granted now without some sort of deal in place. I think it was only possible if agreed prior to the summer deadline as it was set out in the WA.

Will things be easier after 1 Jan? The French (in particular) will have lost access to all our fishing grounds so anything the EU can get ā€˜backā€™ might be easier for Macron to sell to the French fishermen?

If you were the EU, would you make any assumptions about the possibility of a deal being ratified early in 2021 when you know you are dealing with the UK?

UK and France have similar sized fishing industries: 622,000 tonne annual catch and 12,000 fishermen on the British side, and 700,000 tonne catch and 16,000 fishermen on the French side. Fish caught by French fishermen in UK waters accounts for 25% of their total annual catch. Fish caught in EU waters by British fishermen accounts for 13% of their total catch.

So France is taking a bigger hit to their fishing industry with a bad deal or no deal. But fishing is a tiny industry for France and UK and they both will be hurt. Itā€™s the emotive aspect thatā€™s even caused this to be a sticking point.

Yes, every single english person is currently yelling about those things. Are you a taxi driver by any chance?

Itā€™s hard for them (fishermen) to find alternative work/business. They kind of specialized, right!

Isnā€™t this over the 12 to 200 mile zone just as much as the 12 mile or divided in 2 (a the channel)?
Oh! and good luck to patrolling the 200 mile zone. Also I hope some nincompoop doesnā€™t think itā€™s a good idea to survey the channel area with submarines.

As mentionned earlier Macron has promised a compensation package to the French fishermen. This indicates that as far as France is concerned this is wrapped up. Even so the UK keeps implying any move by the EU is driven by France on this subjet (see posts earlier) which I doubt. Btw I think Denmark gets hit hardest perhaps worth looking in their direction.

I donā€™t know much about fishing but at a guess channel fishing will go on as normal and the continental shelf stuff will move to Irish waters. Iā€™m really not sure France loses much.
