Because she’s something completely different and I suspect there might be some actual levelling up under her watch. Ask yourself this, would you rather have her or Truss running the country right now? I’d rather have @Mascot than Truss and he’d introduce communism by a week next Tuesday!
Yes it is.
And how any sane person can vote Conservative, I’ll never know.
Broaden your horizons. We’ve discussed things on here for years. Do I strike you as insane?
You make a good point and like you I am also a “floater” in terms of voting.
However, I would highlight the collapse of the “red wall” was decades in the making and largely driven by poverty and lack of opportunities. Both main parities have ignored (and continue ignore) the problem of how to “regenerate” the North of England and eventually something had to give.
Normally, I have found that people “find” a party and stick to it.
I think the analogy is a bit wrong, and equating support of a political party to support of a football team is a bit of an example of why we are in the mess we’re in.
I would suggest the football team should be considered the country - I can’t choose not to be a Liverpool fan in the same way I can’t not be British - and the manager/owners are the government in charge. So yes, I wanted Roy sacked when he was in charge of the club, just like I want the Tories removed when they are in charge of the country.
For me, I couldn’t in good conscience vote Blair after the war. My vote went to the Lib Dem’s.
But that’s also in the knowledge that, because if our insane political systems, not voting labour means you might as well vote Tory.
I voted Labour again for Brown (who should have been a great Prime Minister - should never done that deal with Blair) before rejoining the party again under Corbyn.
Only for you, mate.
On a serious note, I think this demonstrates how totally warped politics has become. I consider myself a pretty boring Social Democrat. I believe that natural monopolies should be run by the states, and private enterprise left to do everything else, I believe in free education, health and access to the law, and that we should have a robust welfare state to prevent people falling into destitution. In 2022, this gets you called a communist, but in reality it makes as much sense as calling your right of centre views ‘fascist’.
Given that you vote for the Tories, you must be.
Labour made two catastrophic blunders regarding the red wall
The first was to take it for granted. Much as they had in Scotland, the Labour Party assumed those votes were in the bank.
The second was to fail to challenge the Tories narrative on immigration. The Tories have spent many years cutting essential public services and attacking the welfare state. During this time they have cultivated the idea that the reason you can’t get a GP appointment is because of the Pakistani family who have moved in down the road. Labour got swept up in this debate, and felt compelled to treat immigration as a problem, rather than calling out the Tories for this divisive, racist bullshit. It left Labour absolute boxed in when it came to Brexit.
I’ve no idea what you are on about, but your football team is for life as you well know.
I would support Liverpool if they were in the Conference thingy or whatever. I don’t even have a choice.
I could vote for any party I want.
See the not so subtle difference?
What if they were bought by North Korea?
It’s a ginger thing. Don’t judge…
There should be no allegiance to political parties. Supporting a football team is antithesis to that.
It isn’t really though is it? If that were the case FC United wouldn’t exist. Glory hunters wouldn’t exist. If I had been a Newcastle fan, I wouldn’t be anymore. Plenty of people pick up a team when they are at Uni that they didn’t support as a kid, but end up supporting them more.
It’s certainly the usual that people will stick with one team for life, but even then there is always a choice.
Table is set for either a complete reversal of that mini-budget, or a second major plunge of sterling, or a massive cut in public spending to fund those tax cuts instead of borrowing. Bond yields are delivering a hard No. Any stimulus value (limited, imo, because they go to areas of the economy with low marginal propensity to consume) is going to be overwhelmed by mortgages currently pricing at 7.5%.
UK default swaps spiking too. Guardian calls this a ‘market panic’, more like a feeding frenzy. Shorts are moving in. Today is a quieter day, but only because of the sense that a choice has been forced.
So I only work for myself, share the wealth round myself and pay almost no tax??? Sign me up!
But surely the contrary is true? You and I lean to the right, so we’re going to gravitate to the blue side. Those who lean to the left go red. Your core beliefs are in control here.
It’s down to the individual obviously but I’m not a Liverpool fan because it’s my home, fav city, I love it’s anthem, I agree with the politics etc. Purely chance. Surely that’s less binding than core beliefs?
That assumes that the policies of political parties and the principles that are most important to you both stay static. Neither do.
Calling @Klopptimist’s views “right of centre” implies a moderation that doesn’t exist.
