In many ways, the poisoned chalice aspect of the role is exactly what the Tories need. It should dissuade all these chancers interested in only self promotion from taking it on and leave it only to the actual professionals content to knuckle down and do the job. Why? Any news that gets you in the news is good news in the current climate - what there is of it on any level. For example Braverman, Baker and Truss will be looked on as being high profile, a brand that’s had broad exposure rather than anything they actually did or do.
