UK Politics Thread (Part 2)

He will fight for unity and create disunity, surely?

The Telegraph have ran a headline saying ā€œIt’s not time for Borisā€ (paraphrasing). Given that he has literally worked for them - perhaps he still does I’m not sure - as a columnist then it would suggest he has decided not to run.

Absolutely the worst by a long way.

ā€˜goes on a campaign trail for next GE’

What would he have to say though ? Without his ā€˜get Brexit done’ mantra to bash people over the head with , what could he actually campaign on ?

Get Brexit done would become got brexit done.

And he’d say some meaningless shit about unlocking growth.

The end.

ā€˜Tory dirty tricks row! I’m told some MPs are being threatened with de-selection by their associations if they don’t vote for Boris Johnson in leadership contest.’

And there we have it ; the base of the Conservative Party now adopting the intimidation tactics of Trump’s GOP.

ā€˜He did a good job on Brexit.’

The UK is done…confirmed by some old biddy on me telly machine.

Said it ages ago that this group is the real ones that hold power.

They created and are still leading this mess

But the right will argue the same with the unions. Big difference though

One of the big problems, both here and in America, that has led to Trumps and Johnson’s, is that our democratic institutions are just not designed to cope with them. They function on the presumption of basic decency and honesty. When narcissistic liars like Trump or Johnson turn up the structures just buckle.

The least worst candidate is a billionaire who exploited a non Dom status while serving as chancellor, couldn’t persuade (or didn’t try) his own wife to pay her tax, and who broke law and received a police fine while in office.

That’s how far the Tory party has fallen.

If he’s competent (and he is) right now he could be a baby eating, United supporting flat earther who believes in young earth creation, the Loch Ness Monster and alien abduction. Anything for sanity and stability. One thing we do know, nobody’s calling a GE.

Remember Rishi being filmed saying that areas in Kent, I think it was, should get more money than other less well off areas?

That’s one fear I have with Rishi. He continues with that philosophy

My second fear is he is completely disconnected from the needs of the country. This is a guy that didn’t know how to use a debit card. Having someone completely insulated from the issues facing people, families and small businesses never feels right imo.

Dunno. We’re already seeing @Klopptimist starting to buckle. 2 years could be a long time

It was not only that they should get more money but that he had been a key part in making sure money that was previously being sent to ā€œurbanā€ areas was instead being given to rural ones. The subtext was racial, not only class based.

And yes he said that at a campaign rally during the leadership election in one of the richest villages in the UK.

Dear Sir,

Tunbridge Wells is a beautiful town in the garden of England which boasts three branches of Waitrose and four golf clubs. We take great exception to being described as a village and demand a full apology.

Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells

I think this is the wrong take. They set rules around leadership elections and feedback views from backbenchers to party leadership. They’re not really kingmakers or drivers of policy.

My mistake, got myself confused between the 1922 and the ERG or whatever they call themselves these days.

Think you’ve got that wrong, mate. That small backbench cohort wields a disproportionate amount of power.
