Short of massive investment in nuclear (which takes an eternity to plan for and build) I donā€™t see how we can move to 100% renewable. Knowing there is no hydro capacity, is there significant geothermal potential in this country to pick up the slack for weather independent power generation?

A quick Google suggests that weā€™re somewhat on our way to having utility-scale battery storage, although Iā€™m not sure why they measure it in terms of GW/MW. I suspect itā€™s mainly down to the amount of energy that is required at a particular instant, which another article by them suggests that it may be because these projects are measured in terms of capacity and duration.

Now, the first link suggests that the UK has around 16GW in the pipeline, whereas this website suggests that around 30GW to 50GW may be needed. This one suggests that as of 2021, we were already at 10.5GW deployed, and this one suggests that as of April 2022, there is 32GW planned capacity in the pipeline.

https://grid.iamkate.com/ suggests that at the moment I write this, the instantaneous demand in the UK for electricity is 32.2GW. Fun fact, at this moment, itā€™s 57.2% renewables-generated.

Now this barely qualifies as a back of a napkin analysis, but it does suggest that itā€™s potentially feasible at least, and quite a bit of progress have already been made towards it.

You donā€™t just move to 100% renewable like that. Itā€™s a case of year on year increases but treating other sources as backup.

The data centre that I worked in in Scotland received all itā€™s electricity from wind turbines. If there was a need to balance the grid they would cut our supply and we would run on UPS for a while. If that started to get depleted they would switch us back on and if the smelly stuff really hit the fan we had diesel generators on site.

I think where the UK could do some fair catching up is with biogas. It can sit around until needed and it reduces methane from sewage, garden waste and so on. Of course that actually relies on collecting the stuff and not just dumping it in the sea.

THAT. IS. A. DISGRRRRACE.
I wished Kay Burley had a follow-up when Gillian swatted the question away saying they were all there due to a one-off situation, but maybe there isnā€™t much data to support it one way or the other and its probably best Kay doesnā€™t revert to Tory Anecdote mode like Gillian.

The headline is disgraceful. It makes it seem as though the police officer was hurt as a direct result of the protests, when in reality, they were hurt because of a collision between two lorries.

Another asshole claiming ā€œdistractionā€. Even though he was caught dead to rights!

Oh god, weā€™re going to be hearing this line a lot arenā€™t we.

Sunak appears to be making a real mess of the Williamson situation.

We already have. I think theyā€™re going to begin to sound a bit ridiculous if they keep trotting the same line out.
