I think we are all complicit in tax dodging. Who hasnāt paid cash to contractors? Had some work done recently. Two prices with the cheapest for cash in hand.
Having just completed the annual chore of filling in my tax return I can sympathise but not condone it.
Dodging a bit of tax is a legitimate economic lever. On a personal level this is something like a pension policy. For corporations it is tax write-downs on new equipment.
The problem comes when the tax dodge only exists for the purpose of dodging tax. When I was self-employed it always amazed me that things which looked like cooking the books were legal and above board and yet what would appear to be legitimate business expenses werenāt.
Yep, itās mental.
Iām a limited company contractor and some of the things I can claim relief on are an eye opener.
However, having spent the last 15 years paying full UK tax, despite being out of country for 190 days a year missing out on benefits my tax goes towards, I have no qualms fleecing back what I can
Working oversea, paying tax in that country.
That amount is then offset from the amount showing on my completed self assessment.
But in a nutshell, taxed for the entire 365 days
His situation doesnāt make a lot of sense to me. Usually you will get taxed in the country you are resident, then if there is any other worldwide income, they will tax the difference of the income total and the income that tax was paid on (plus taking tax on any secondary tax-free thresholds as you really should only have one of them). Thatās if thereās a tax treaty with those countries involved. Which is all standard fare, and fair if Iām honest. Iād be kind of shocked if heās been taxed twice on the same income as that is was a tax treaty is for.
A. I only see the benefits of my taxes 180 days a year. Iām not on a jolly, Iām earning money of which 100% comes back into the UK economy.
B. Iām taxed at higher rate on the balance after overseas tax, despite it being under the threshold.
Doesnāt seem fair to me, but it is what it is.
Point being, Iāll use every tax dodging legal loophole I can, and some illegal ones if I think I can get away with it
Not really, the whole Palace of Westminister is rampant with it.
A work colleague used to work as a cleaner in parlament and said cleaners had to be very circumspect when entering toilets for cleaning to give any staff/MPās the chance to hide anything they had on them.
Scotrail are the worst.
Travelling from Aberdeen last week, had to make a connection at Dundee, according to the timetable I had about 7 minutes to change platforms.
Got to Dundee and my connecting train was pulling away.
No announcement on the train, no effort to wait for an incoming train.
Station staff totally disinterested and unhelpful.
Bid him good evening and wished him luck in his forthcoming strike.
He smiled and thanked me.
His smile soon disappeared when I said he should be striking for less pay, to reflect the piss poor service Iād just had.
Promoting performance related pay is surely hate speech and I expect you to receive a visit from the local PCSO who will advise you to attend a course whilst taking a selfie for their Twitter profile.
