UK Politics Thread (Part 2)

Ah libel. That age old tool whereby the very rich get to tell the not so rich to shut the fuck up and go away.

John Crace had a brilliant line in the guardian. How come when the Tories make honest mistakes with their tax, it’s never that they’ve over paid? You don’t ever get grateful Tory MPs gratefully accepting £3.5m pound from HMRC as a tax rebate. It’s funny how these ‘errors’ are exclusively in the politicians interests.

That will change as all the young and middle aged people who have been totally fucked by the Tories become the older people

‘If you’re not a liberal when you’re 25, you have no heart. If you’re a conservative by the time you’re 35, you have no brain’

(paraphrase)

Socialists are idealists, capitalists are realists.

There’s nothing wrong with either philosophy in principle; the problems arise when either one is taken to its unfettered extreme.

The idea that neo-liberal capitalisism isn’t an ideology!

To be completely fair, why would anyone publicise if they’ve received a massive tax rebate? It either draws attention to how much money they earn (and therefore getting the whiff of being out of touch), or gets seen as attention-seeking.

It also doesn’t make for good motivation for journalists to seek it out. Political scandals on the other hand…

Nobody should be in any mood to be completely fair. Certainly not towards a man who claimed on his MP expenses to heat his stables.

What did you think about the Labour MP being charged with faking expenses to pay for cocaine(allegedly)?

Not sure if this belongs here of on the -isms thread but UK government has rejected making menopause a protected characteristic because it could “discriminate against men”.

Presumably this is the same as discrimination that exists for pregnancy and motherhood so I can see which direction this is going.

Weird and troubling, but he is an ex-MP who apparently resigned because of his cocaine habit was out of control and he couldn’t cope with the pressures of the job. He was accused by someone he tried to rope into his scam (who blew the whistle on him) as suffering a severe psychotic breakdown and being beset by delusions of paranoia. I’ve seen some suggestions that he himself is autistic, but either way he clearly should never have been selected in the first place. He only served two years before quitting.

I don’t want to make excuses for him, but there is a world of difference between what happens when a Tory MP finds themselves embroiled in scandal and when it’s a Labour MP.

Labour are in no way squeaky clean when it comes to scandal, but there is far less trying to get away with it.

As I’ve been suffering from the menopause for several years, schardenfreud.

That a shame. Menopause can be properly debilitating.

In all seriousness, the male menopause - the Andropause, is a thing.

Mostly it manifests as weight gain, erectile dysfunction and loss of sex drive but it can also lead to memory loss, lack of concentration and cognitive impairment, and it some cases even voting Conservative.

Scandal after scandal. Utterly rotten

Wasn’t he the one who threatened YouGov pollsters to not release any polls favouring Corbyn?

EDIT: This claim is wrong.

that cant be true

Don’t know, but he is the person that actually developed the YouGov polling system.

Given the stuff we know now it wouldn’t surprise me.

Yes.
