UK Politics Thread (Part 2)

Did the schools ask their employees if they were going to strike (not the same as asking if they are part of a union) as they are within their rights to? Thats on them if not.

Just checked and it is definitely a protected attribute. I don’t do payrolls so I’m not sure how you would protect it. Thinking on, there is a requirement in Germany to ask for religion for payroll purposes and that definitely is a protected attribute. That’s not to say that it can’t be asked for but the only scope for use is the payroll system.

ā€œApparentlyā€ they can’t be asked.

Asked if they are striking? Yes they can. They can’t ask if they are in a union.

There was a move a few years back where the government sort to end the deduction of union subs from salaries so that people would have to pay the unions directly. I don’t know whether that was only for central government or public sector as a whole.

I have a DD for my union subs, they aren’t shown on my payslip.

You can’t ask if you’re in a union but can ask if you’re striking.

OK.

Barking.

What’s really barking is the amount of teachers who want to quit the profession because it’s turned into a terrible job and the effect this has had on millions of kids educations.

But lets get irate about one day of inconvenience.

You don’t have to be in the union to strike.

No but it’s far more likely. I don’t know the figures but I’d imagine those who aren’t in unions don’t strike. I’d bet there’s a tiny minority of teachers who aren’t in a union. Was compulsory for Mrs as a head.

It’s not barking

It’s because there is a demonstrable track record of employers discriminating against union members.

Ah. Another protected species.

The whole point of a strike is to cause disruption and inconvenience. Why on Earth would unions do anything that helps minimise inconvenience to the school, and therefore the Government.

No. It’s literally people get fired for union related activity.

Imagine working at Amazon and having to disclose you are in a union. Your feet wouldn’t touch the ground on your way out the door.

When was that? Closed shops have been illegal for over 30 years.

Imaging working for a service manager by the government. Your bosses, the government constantly ask more from you, but that isn’t returned in the way of improved salary or terms. It’s also done in stealth, behind your back through increased bureaucracy and targets that demand more effort and time from you. Imagine not getting a real term pay rise for 10 years, even parity would have been nice.

Imagine working for an employer where you walking out into alternative employment is difficult, less options without a career change.

Welcome to teaching, nursing etc. in 2023 UK.

The blue one for me.My kids were born when i was 35 so i’d still have the same 10 yr olds at that point,I’d regain 7 years of my life as i’m now 52 and with the 50 million i’d be able to quit the job i’m still in which coincidently started causing me health problems at roughly 45 yrs old.

Parents? Schools?

No idea mate, no idea.

Yep, never vote for me. We’d disagree on unions.

A debate I just can’t be arse having.

I think you mean, employee

and yes you do, as you are going to be part of a CBA with the employer and the company needs to know which one you belong to, for the details such as pay and benefits and role/duties as outlined by the CBA.
