UK Politics Thread (Part 3)

Multiple giffs, memes and funny pictures would be appropriate here but I’m simply going with the light at the end of the tunnel is that of an approaching train.

That’s my concern re Labour. Obviously they won’t be as shite and corrupt as the Tories. That’s not the argument. But everything we hear from them is about growth- the neoliberal agenda

I don’t think they have a great deal of choice in that regard. The UK’s deficit is high - it has been higher, but generally only in periods of identifiable crisis (2008, covid, etc). Debt is high, and government share of GDP is near an all-time high. But it is absolutely clear that the next government will be under enormous pressure to increase social spending. There is basically no fiscal room.

The clear implication is that growth will be needed to claw out of the hole. I don’t think that is inherently neoliberal, it seems pretty damn clear that tax cuts aren’t going to work to address poor productivity growth in the UK. The market itself rendered that verdict on Truss-onomics, but will apply absolutely the same medicine to any fiscally unsupported spending. The incoming government is going to need to prioritize social spending that intersects with productivity (for example, affordable day care to increase women’s participation in the workforce) to be able to both demonstrate social progress while increasing tax revenues and adding some degrees of freedom.

The next Chancellor is going to face a generational challenge.

Starmer really is a jerk isn’t he?
Sad statements at an event organised by the unmentionnable.

He’s dropped the level to that of the tories, get the uneducated vote!
The only thing that’s needed is for some more and better education, starting with ‘our’ politicians.

He was clumsy with what he said because it left him open to criticism from people who either didnt follow what he said properly or want to have a go at him but in now way is it on the level of the Tories.

He said the first thing to do is get planes taking people back!
It was a debate on immigration so he had to be prepared.
There’s no excuse, if you are going after the uneducated vote you say uneducated things, that’s what he did and that’s what the tories do!
The 1st thing to do is process people correctly, it’s the only thing to say. No need for planes to be invoked (they will be empty in any case so it’s a lie).

He and his advisers are idiots!

I have a lot of time for Brewdog, first because it is generally solid beer, and second because as a home brewer I love how open they are with their recipes…but what the fuck is going on there?!?

I think BrewDog is supposed to have had a rotten culture for a long time? The “more on this story” section of that article says a lot.

Education is the key to everything.

Unfortunately, the billionaires who control public policy don’t want thinkers; they want followers. And that’s exactly what the “education” system produces for them.

Just in case you know anyone who is thinking of voting for Reform:

A lot of home truths there. Including the fact that it doesn’t matter how extreme right wing the Tories go, they will never win over people who have a problem with a brown person being Prime Minister.

His mistake is to single out a country, but the rest of his comment is consistent with what he has been saying on immigration for two years.

The Tories have given up on processing asylum claims. Their solution is indefinite detention and a harebrained scheme to fly people to Rwanda. Meanwhile - and this can’t be emphasised enough - while in this limbo 200 children have disappeared. Most likely to criminal gangs to to be put to a purpose nobody wants to think about.

Labour want to

  1. reestablish legal routes and set up a border force to kill off the gangs (although the former probably does that without needing the latter)
  2. efficiently process claims and reach a swift decision
  3. allow those meeting threshold to stay. Remove those failing to meet it.

If Starmer had dropped to the level of the Tories he would be using Nazi rhetoric like ‘swarms’ to describe asylum seekers, flirt with leaving the ECHR to allow performative cruelty, and be talk about to throwing colossal amounts of our money at indefinite detention and unworkable removal schemes
