And what would you replace them with? President Boris?
The monarchy is an anachronism and if you were setting up the country from scratch there is no way you would institute one. But I am always perplexed at republicans who see the current monarchy as the thing that is most wrong with the country. Have they not seen the rest of the shitshow?
from a former lowly colonial subject: Do those of you who oppose the monarchy, and I mean oppose, not just ‘i am ok to live with or without them’, are there very specific reasons or just that because it is old and a tradition that you don’t see any relevance for?
It’s actually one thing I would disagree with. I think there is great utility in a non-political, ceremonial HoS. In some countries, the president is chosen as someone who is generally respected and seen as representing the best of the country.
When Israel was formed, they offered the presidency to Albert Einstein. He declined, partly as he wasn’t in great health, but I like the idea.
I’d always suggested that someone who would be a suitable candidate in the UK would be David Attenborough as he was a similar age to the Queen and fits the role of being internationally respected and represents the country at its best.
I think the key is that a suitable candidate could be both appointed and removed, if necessary. I think many people are blinded by their genuine affection for Queen Elizabeth. Not every member of that family has been so welcome.
That attempt came well into the Prem years after Utd had already established themselves as the league’s top club. It was ruled out in large part because Sky owned the long term broadcast rights without any meaningful competition for it likely to be raised at the next bod.
There are some reports that Murdoch was contacts years before when Knighton was trying to buy them but at that time he was not interested.
Edwards had spend several years poking around trying to find someone to buy him out before the 91 public offering. I think the first reported case of it was to Maxwell but there were several other cases and Murdoch’s name has come up as a potential person to reach out but its never been credibly reported that he had any interest.
It’s likely relevant that the official 98 bid was not from him individually, but from Sky and was far more about bolstering Sky’s position (super league was a conversation even back then, as were Utd’s interest in finding a way to broadcast their own games on their newly launched TV station) than anything to do with Utd
Anyway as a Singaporean, we do have deep historical ties with the UK and our relationship with the UK and it’s Monarchy has been one of respect and cooperation. So as our PM noted in his congratulatory message that we look forward to another period of expanding relations and stability. For my UK friends, whether you like the monarchy or not, I just hope whatever it is, that your nation and families will be safe and prosperous and everything will come out better for it.
