How many Green Party policies have been put forward as national policy?
The right wing of the Labour Party and involved in sabotaging the best chance we had of a progressive government in decades.
The second part of that sentence is relevant, though?
Not really.
Are you trying to say that all policies put forward by non-centrist parties are based upon pie-in-the-sky thinking?
This is interesting, Carney saying out loud what a lot of Canadians are thinking about the UK. Many people who are not particularly fond of the monarchy are bewildered to see Charles making as many gestures of support he can, while the British government takes on something of a simp role for Trump.

No, I’m trying to explain that my clumsy phrasing had the intention of specifying that condition as an essential part of it. How would you rephrase it to do so?
Not my job.
I cynically view it as an unfortunate consequence of the UKs very weak international position after Brexit.
It is possible that the UK would have been a bit more protective of the Commonwealth if it was not in such a desperate position, where it has to cow tow in fear for Trump for Realpolitik reasons. The UK is after all, very vulnerable now with high debt and rising social tensions, in a time where it must channel money it doesn’t really have, into rearmament as well as incentives to get the economy growing.
After Trump was elected, being outside the EU, grants them very little room for navigation, as they lack both Hard Power and Soft Power and they are outside the European trade cartell.
But yes, it is very note worthy and much of the diplomacy of the UK seems pathetic, (particularly the little tail-wagging dog diplomacy in relation to Trump) when viewed from abroad (but again, symptom of a very weak position).
It is so note worthy that Norwegian newspapers wrote articles about this months ago (betrayal/abandonment of Canada in the Trade War).
i mean, if the Commonwealth was indeed an effective organisation and not just symbolic and cultural, the UK would have fought the Trade War on behalf of Canada as patron and ally. But it doesn’t, because it is weak and it has no such obligations strictly speaking.
Of course, not fighting it on behalf of Canada, in a time of desperation for Canada; obviously means that the cultural and symbolic aspect of it, weakens greatly.
I think the Starmer gov should have dared to do things quite differently and that it has been unecessary to be so serf-like in respect to Trump, but again, Westminster are terrified, so does it out of fear, I would imagine.
But the truth is that the EU is terrified and very weak as well (lacks Hard power), so Trump has also managed to dictate events in relations to European security and everyone is reacting and constantly changing their positions visa vi Russia’s agression, due to lack of strenght in Europe.
But it would have greatly helped both the EU and the UK if the UK had not withdrawn from the union, at least in trade, if not that much in Hard Power.
But this is an Era of Bullies. And when you are weak, you get eaten by those…
An interesting article, although it barely scratches the surface of the matter at hand: the deliberate dumbing down of the public, so that the billionaires can do whatever they want without fear of reprisal.
I’m a bit sad to see we’re so jaded by British politics (with very good reason) that today’s news has barely registered on here…
Here’s to this being one baby-step on the road towards a better future for our kids.
Worried about the future for your kids?
Climate change should be top of your list.
I did say one step.
I’ve seen some other things mentioned, such as a reinstatement of the pet passport scheme, which were removed largely just a malicious action by the Johnson government aimed at British nationals with EU ties.
There was also some mention of things to help forces veterans. I’m not sure of the details, but I think it’s related to the Aufenthaltsdokument for ex-servicemen.
From what I’ve seen of “the deal” it honestly looks pretty decent. There’s nothing earth shattering in there, but it’s got the press and Fuckbook frothing like a Stephen King character and that had me chuckling away.
But again they will use it against him. They are determined to drive the UK into the gutter.
Baby-steps is the best we can hope for at the moment.
Any big moves and the billionaire class will end him (they’re trying as it is), and that’s praying for no more own-goals.
Dare I ask which paper? I note that on the fisheries he has managed to negotiate something on shellfish, which is quite an achievement given that they are all covered in shit.
Justified criticism of the Government aside, the right wing press reporting on the reset deal is a crystal clear barometer of the shit Starmer has to deal with from the right wing press.
By any objective measure, Brexit has been a catastrophe, and the last few years have shown us exactly why Putin took such an interest in destabilising the EU in the first place.
This is a really good deal that corrects some of the worst aspects of Brexit, and goes beyond the best I’d hoped for with the febrile state of the country on the Brexit issue.
Look at these ghouls doubling down on the chaos they’ve caused. They have nothing. Nothing but this self destructive, ideological crusade to improvise millions.
And they’ll drag a load of working class Labour voters with them.
