Anyway, Starmer on the ropes?

Labour are guaranteed not to have learned the lesson and will no doubt continue to lurch to the right.

Not at all unhappy about the Greens winning the by election,if,in the unlikely event,it puts a rocket up Starmers arse,it will all be worth while.
It looks a pretty timely warning that Labour really needs to think about its natural constituency which is not the handful of trillionaires.
If they don’t and the people are subjected to Fartage Govt it will be with Labours compliments and they may never recover, and don’t deserve to!

Majority 4,402 11.9
Turnout 36,903 47.6 −0.2

Initially I was thinking it was a poor turnout (well it is) but it is very similar to the general election. The fact that under half the electorate turned out probably says as much as the result. However, it is clear that Labour and Starmer have fucked this up royally.

Gorton and Denton doesn’t seem like a typical Green constituency but apparently there is a huge student population maybe as high as 40% in parts closest to the campuses.

Labour, who had not lost an election in that area since 1931, fell into third place. The party’s 25.4% of the vote represented a near halving of their 50.8% of the vote in 2024 and the 13th biggest ever fall in the party’s support in a by-election.

Reform are currently on the radio moaning about voting and specifically Urdu speaking voters needing translations going into voting booths as a family block.

Conservatives absolutely nowhere too.

I had feared that across the Reform and Conservative vote would be the highest as a combined percentage. That could still be possible in a GE.

Circling round it appears that despite the work that has been done tackling immigration, that message isn’t getting through. As discussed previously it doesn’t matter what good Labour do, the message is getting out there.

I fear the Greens will also struggle on this.

They are honestly a one trick pony

I suspect that is called safety in numbers. When I lived in an area with a significant Jewish population they would often vote together.

I’m actually surprised that there is such a large south-Asian population there. I have a friend who lives in Burnage, and whilst it is certainly mixed race, there isn’t that much of a visible Muslim population. There is a mosque there, but that’s about it. I’m assuming that the constituency includes the site of a former cotton mill.

Students obviously a big part of it. But there has also been a notable tendency in recent years for left wing of labour to move to Greens. It’s definitely part of the Green’s strategy to target unhappy labour voters.

I think the initial polling helped them too as the narrative around Labour is so negative at the moment it increased the likelihood that any undecided voters, would switch to them to head off Reform. Labour really needed to have been leading in the Polls ahead of the vote to have had much chance of winning it.

Just got an email from Keir Starmer advising me that The Greens can’t win a General Election, and any vote for them is going to open the door to a Reform Government.

That will do it, Keir. Keep going mate.

If progressive Labour voters get cheesed off with Labour,it is hardly surprising, the only real place to go is Green or stay home, can never understand what that achieves, certainly whinging about any Govt looks hollow.I have voted Green here a couple of times because I was disgusted with Labor but our preferential system allows you second choice Labor,theory..if the Green wins,a major wake up,which !abor is due for.

Obviously Sir Keir is a slow learner or he cannot read the room, with a swing like that, his vote could be affected by varying degrees across the country.

The surge in Green membership should have been a wake up. I don’t know what you call this anymore.

The shite Labour were pulling in this by-election, fingers crossed they learn and don’t resort to tactics like this again. No vision from them just, ‘don’t vote for the other guys’.

I wonder how, if at some point the Greens become a credible / broader appeal opposition party, i.e. beyond one off protest votes, the other parties will try to counter. Particularly Reform and particularly, if the Greens are their main opposition in terms of securing a path to No 10.

edit - just saw the post above
 there we have it!
