There is some truth in that. Often governments specify targets and metrics to measure them by.
Goodhart’s Law then comes into play, “When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.”
With the LFS they are trying to make sense of the data. I’ve actually just filled in a similar type of survey for the German Ministry of Labour and Social affairs regarding the experience of migrant workers. They offered a 5€ gift voucher for filling in the survey. I don’t know if something similar would work with the IFS or if it would skew the figures, because they would get more responses from those that needed a petrol voucher or whatever.
Firstly, I am not suggesting it should happen or that it would be a good thing. However, it would also be a stupid not to consider it, would it not? If you remove the Party and the individual, it is quite a valid idea. Someone, who has a good rapport with Trump and Musk, would command a bit more respect with the objections/concerns of the Government…
Just a quick question, what would Labour voters/members do if the PM engaged in this proposition?
Your post is very dramatic to say the least. Labour hasn’t even agreed to entertain Farage’s idea and you’re having kittens.
Politics is about balance, most Governments - especially in the UK, would not be in power if they adopted predominantly Left or Right policies. Additionally, the majority of the public, the people who vote and decide the outcome of elections couldn’t care less about who was in power as long as it made their lives more prosperous, or in fact easier.
So a question… Starmer entertains Farage’s proposal and with his help, the UK negotiates a really good trade deal with the US, with maybe a few Concessions that go against Labour’s principles. Would you be happy with this? Or would you feel Starmer/Labour sold out?
Ffs there is no good trade deal that involves a Trump lead US. That is bonkers to even consider it.
Secondly, do you honestly believe Farage has suggested that his involvement for the good of the Uk? He is a grifter that has done eff all for his constituents but is more ghan happy to attend Steve Bannon right wing boot camps and seminars telling wealthy people how to set up multi national citizenships and passports for tax avoidance.
Thirdly, there is not a single Farage policy that would make people wealthier. Not a chance. Itcwould make him wealthier though.
His involvement is lunacy on every level.
I would ask him how his Clacton surgeries are going.
He’s that as well.
So far he’s convinced 15k people to pay £25 to be a member if Reform plc. As members they have no say in the party, no ownership, no voting rights, cannot question party leadership and so on.
Reform party membership has now grown larger than the Tory party membership.
Ffs how do you know that? And guess what Trump is the President in waiting, so what does the Government do.
Starmer: Mandelson, don’t both going the US, Noo_Noo said that “there is no good trade deal that involves a Trump lead US”. So let’s hold fire for 4/5 years.
Mandelson: Okay boss, but you do know we may not be in Government in 4/5 years.
No, and I didn’t suggest it was.
If you read my post I said to remove the party and the individual but you can’t even do that. If you did that then would it be an idea worth considering?
Who is in Power?….it wouldn’t be Farage’s or An others policy.
@Lynch04
My opinion on this hypothetical scenario would be a disaster. Farage does not have the background experience and knowledge to deal with the US government on a UK-US trade negotiations at a high level. He is an MP for Clacton, he should be serving his constituents. He did nothing as an MEP except collect a monthly salary and a handsome pension allowance.
With regards to dealing with Trump’s government, UK government are dealing with a man (in my view, a convicted felon and businessman who has been bankrupted so many times). He doesn’t understand the concept of ‘a special relationship’ with the UK, he really doesn’t care for it. He is not a politician, but a self-absorbed Businessman. He will only work with someone if he can get something better out of it for himself. As Bonnie Greer eloquently described "He is a totally amoral transactional Businessman’.
He is the kind of man who will squeeze as much out of the UK government as possible by any monetary means. He will rather benefit himself rather than do something good for his country. He will discard Farage at a moments notice, as soon as there is no use for him. The UK government have to be smart, shrewd and pragmatic in dealing with this unpredictable and untrustworthy git!
