@Lynch04
My opinion on this hypothetical scenario would be a disaster. Farage does not have the background experience and knowledge to deal with the US government on a UK-US trade negotiations at a high level. He is an MP for Clacton, he should be serving his constituents. He did nothing as an MEP except collect a monthly salary and a handsome pension allowance.
With regards to dealing with Trump’s government, UK government are dealing with a man (in my view, a convicted felon and businessman who has been bankrupted so many times). He doesn’t understand the concept of ‘a special relationship’ with the UK, he really doesn’t care for it. He is not a politician, but a self-absorbed Businessman. He will only work with someone if he can get something better out of it for himself. As Bonnie Greer eloquently described "He is a totally amoral transactional Businessman’.
He is the kind of man who will squeeze as much out of the UK government as possible by any monetary means. He will rather benefit himself rather than do something good for his country. He will discard Farage at a moments notice, as soon as there is no use for him. The UK government have to be smart, shrewd and pragmatic in dealing with this unpredictable and untrustworthy git!
Because Trump is the anti-christ, we’re all going to die immediately, Musk is a ACTUALLY a Bond villain (although he hasn’t been race and gender swapped yet) and 14.7 polar bears per day will die the very day Trump takes charge due to global warming.
Because Trump has said in the past he wants the NHS as part of any trade deal. He wants to let US pharma all over it and remove the protected price deals the NHS currently has.
Still no. Farage’s only interest is in Farage. Reform is a plc, not a political party. He owns 60% of the company. Farage in Europe was exactly the same. As the fisheries minister he never attended a session. Clacton surgeries havent happened.
I was speaking hypothetically that should Reform win the next GE. He has no idea what he’s doing as pm. He’d be like Truss on steroids.
Evening @Maria thank you for a good honest reply. I can appreciate why you have these views.
The problem is, the UK has to deal with Trump whether you or I like it or not. Which is why I didn’t dismiss the Farage idea.
I agree that he could dismiss Farage at any time, but he could also do that to any other representative.
So to raise the question again, if Starmer entertained the idea how would you feel about it?
For a few more days yet. During his first term he said NHS or no deal.
Now you’re getting it, and yes you can remove him by ignoring him for the role he wants and has no right to ask for.
Farage is useless as a politician. He is nothing more than a tik tok specialist.
Evening @Lynch,
Hope you are well.
I personally would not be happy, I don’t trust Farage’s motives. He is not a sincere/patriotic personality for his country as he makes out to be. He looks out for himself and is not a team player He would not be up to the job and he would be out of his depth working with Starmer as a team negotiating with Trump. It would be political and economical catastrophe.
However, what do I know about politics and working for the government, also dealing with American government officials, i am just a …
So what’s your point? Has he mentioned it recently? So because Trump said something in his first term it means that it is set in stone. Ffs Politics is full of people saying things and not following through on it.
I am getting it. You have preconceived perceptions based on it being someone you don’t like. You already know the outcome of any discussions with him being involved because again you don’t like him.
What do you think about Elon Musk’s role in the US government @Lynch04 ?
He worries me more than Trump.
He seems to be hovering in the background like one of those annoying flies which buzzes around and you want to swat it, but can’t.
I am good thanks @Maria I hope you and your family are to.
I really get why you and other members are sceptical of Farage which is why I have tried to ask the question with his involvement removed.
Lets say Biden was President, Tories were in power and a centre left candidate, who had a good rapport with Biden, offered to help in brokering a trade agreement. What would your thoughts be then?
Tbh, I am one of those few people who thinks every US president, doesn’t matter whether he is a Democrat or or Republican, is just full of evil, devious sh*t, just a different face every four years. I just don’t trust ANY President of USA, they are there to serve the self interests at home and abroad and it doesn’t matter what chaos and destruction they indirectly or directly cause worldwide.
I personally don’t believe the Tories will get a left leaning negotiator to help them broker a deal because, their party members will not allow it or will cause chaos in the party. It will be one of their own, hopefully a more level headed and honest one.
I am sceptical of him as a person, disagree with most of his views and see him as an Egomaniac.
However, that being said he is an astute businessman and owns (largely) one of the world’s most valuable companies. So he has to be listened to.
Regarding his role in the US government, I think this is wrong and very much a conflict of interest. I can understand why Trump wants him on his side rather than against him but Musks influence needs to be managed correctly. My biggest concern is that Trump and Musk have similar personalities which is usually a recipe for disaster.
Oh he’ll throw the tables over, no question, Won’t care who he upsets either. The beauty of being crazy ass rich is you can do what you want and just occasionally, that’s a good thing. Ask Bob Iger. “Fuck you” “Hi Bob” Priceless.
I can see why you think that. The problem I see with the US - which is echoed in many Governments - is that you could have the nicest person ever in charge but they are hamstrung in making changes, getting their ideas voted through.
Sadly, I agree with what you are saying and that’s the problem with Politics. The suggestion of a Right leaning individual assisting Labour has been mooted on this forum and I would expect it to be inline with all Labour members. Likewise, I would expect Tory members to follow suit if the situation was reversed.
Maybe that mentality is right or presents less problems, I just don’t agree with the black and white perception that is the rhetoric.
The thing is i don’t consider Jo Biden a nice guy, he just has a different type of evilness. I can’t think of any US president i liked, maybe…Jimmy Carter… just. No, i can’t have him either.
