It will stop once he stands down, but would resume should he win.
There are basically two outcomes.
He loses the by-election. He won’t care - he didn’t want to do it anyway, and he can lie low for a bit and plot his next grift.
He wins the by-election, and the investigation resumes - but this time he can attack it on the basis he has a renewed mandate from ‘The People’ who have spoken and support him over parliamentary processes.
Anyone know what the likelihood of him winning again in Clacton is? He hasn’t done much as the representative in parliament but it was an area that did support him quite heavily.
I can’t remember what his majority was in the election
No idea , but I suspect the likelihood of concerted tactical voting and inter party accommodations just shot through the roof. Getting this twat out of our public life should be priority number one for everyone.
The other parties could do worse than saying they are not going to waste time and money fielding candidates in a vanity by-election. Let him stand unopposed, get him back in the commons, and conclude this investigation.
Labour, Conservatives, Lib Dems and Restore Britain say they will not stand…
A Labour spokesperson says the party will not stand a candidate, calling the by-election a “circus”
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch says the Conservatives will not stand a candidate in Farage’s “fake by-election”
Lib Dem leader Ed Davey has called for all parties to “stand aside and refuse to give oxygen to Farage’s vanity project”
Restore Britain’s Rupert Lowe says his party will not participate in “a Reform-sponsored media circus”
The Green Party has not yet confirmed whether it will put forward a candidate. A spokesman says it was a decision for local members in Clacton but adds: “We are a political party - we contest elections”
A new Writ is usually issued within three months of the vacancy. There have been a few times when seats remained vacant longer than six months. Seats will be left vacant towards the end of a Parliament. They are then filled at the general election.
If there are many vacant seats by-elections can take place on the same day.
The by-election timetable is between 21 and 27 working days from the issuing of the writ.
Happy to disagree. To me it exactly this sort of town that needs to be won over. Not fielding anyone feels, to me, like an admission of defeat. This should be an opportunity - even if it is a stunt.
