UK Politics Thread (Part 5)

I think I was pretty clear.

Obviously we can all make climate conscious choices in our own lives, and every little helps. But by far the biggest source of the problem is in how nation states and corporations organise themselves.

Down-payment on a bottle of whisky?

Seems a pretty daft first move - will reach many who don’t need it, and use up about 8% of the fiscal headroom available. Investment rule should be on either where it pays back fastest, or where it most effectively reaches an intense need.

Thats entirely for show. A gesture ā€œto help working peopleā€ that actually gives very little and shows an early propensity to through money that is not available at things. Very 70s.

I hadn’t realised until reading an article by Rob Ford this morning that the Manchester Mayoral byelection is next Thursday.

It’s using the supplementary voting system rather than first past the post.

Labour favoured to win as local polling has them 16pts up on first round votes and is expected to have the bigger pool of votes to pull from than their rivals in a second round.

Will be interesting to also see how Greens and Reform do. Restore are also running and have a lot of support in the outer areas.

Reform’s candidate is a fucking simpleton. As usual. It really makes you wonder where they get these people from.

On pension, i think the state needs to implement that it“s mandatory to have a pension fund you pay into as employee and that your employee matches to X amount.

Too many people have no pension.

Of course this extra reduction in after tax and pension take home pay would need to be looked at.

I think it’s law that employers have to provide a pension now.

that is true but people can then opt out

And I would have it more where employers have to match your contribution to a certain amount percentage.

Yea it’s a mandatory 3% of salary contribution if the employee earns over Ā£520 a month. Workplace pensions - what your employer can and cannot do - GOV.UK

Timing is unfortunate with the folly in the Persian Gulf creating an upward pressure too, but it very much looks like the bond market is not buying what Burnham is selling - already. Gilt rates are now higher than they have been since July 2007, with the 5% threshold well in the rear view mirror. I don`t think Healey is going to be able to make Reeves’ sums work, let alone fund much new.

I just looked that up. It looks like a variation of FPTP that allows people an additional protest vote.
