US Election 2024

Militarily we are not distracted from that, we are uping our training time with allied nations and more resources are being moved to South East Asia to support the region, the only issue is that the party who loves to publically parade their support of the troops is consistently using military funding as a hostage.

It is one the weirdest things I’ve ever seen. It had Vibes of Naomi Watts’ purposefully bad performance in the first half of Mullholand Drive.

The official response has a long history of being bad. This is new level though. But it’s also true that it’s an extension of what Republican politics has become…really weird performative exhibitions. If you can stomach it, watch Ted Cruz speak, even in an interview, and turn the sound off. You see nothing but High School drama club stand-in level over-acting in all his mannerisms and attempts to emote

It’s a 2 hour policy speech so for all the pomp and circumstance is in reality a really fucking boring event. Most times it also isn’t even THAT important. This one was though given the well trodden story lines over Biden’s capabilities and so was important if not for the substance but the theatre and spectacle. He stumbled several times as is his way, but if anything that seemed to me more powerful than had he been perfect because what it showed is that they dont get in the way of him of doing his job. It was a performance you know landed because the opposition is now veered, at least in the immediate aftermath, from “he’s asleep and too old to do the job” to “he’s a dictator and he’s mean to us”.

For me though the most interesting part was how well he managed the heckling. Its difficult to describe how huge the norm has changed to allow what happened last night compared to as recent as 2009 when we got weeks of pearl clutching (an appropriate response for the time) in response to a single shout of “you lie” to Obama in one of his addresses (while not at a SotU, but still an address to Congress). Today not only is it like a school yard, but there isnt any expectation of it being anything else. Rather than being swayed, Biden has shown a capacity to play with it and last night turned it almost into Panto. I half expected the “he’s behind you” shouts to start coming. Far more effective than high minded serious responses, it really treats them with the contempt and unseriousness they deserve. This was him reacting to Green yelling at him (and wearing a MAGA hat in violation of the chamber dress code) on his way in last night…

These people dont deserve to be taken seriously.

As for the truthfulness of the comments, I think the most representative moment was when he started getting heckled from the crowd on his comments on the collapsed border deal, the camera did a close up on James Lankford, the GOP senator whose efforts in leading his party’s negotiations came to nothing, for a reaction. They caught him mouthing to himself “yeah, that’s right” in agreement with Biden’s characterization of the breakdown of the talks all while a significant section of the Republicans in the crowd were calling him a liar.

I could never figure out whether the ability of Southern women to make ‘Bless your heart’ something like ‘go fuck yourself’ was a good thing or a bad thing

Transcripts of the Biden depositions with Hur have now been released and if anyone had any doubt before that Hur was a political hack doing a hatchet job they should be left with no doubt at all now. That should be kept in mind as he now goes before the GOP led house judiciary committee this week after having abruptly resigned from the DOJ and thus unshakle himself from the expectations of a DOJ employee in these situations

Isn’t the wildlife trying to kill people actively ?

No.

As previously stated, I have never had any form of contact with dangerous animals in Sydney.
Probably in the wilds of Queensland there may be some dangerous things, but don’t forget there are leopards in Mumbai. Does that mean everyone in India is in constant fear?

They should be! Those leopards are badasses.

But there are far more surviving Indians than Australians. That can hardly be a coincidence.

It’s certainly not related to death by spider bite. The last one was in 1979.
Two people died of snake bites in 2023 and four were killed by sharks.
You should be more worried about falling scaffolding.
Sorry for going off topic. Any further discussion of this non-issue in the Downunder thread.

In the meantime Canada is quietly invading all of Europe with deadly flying beasts that will literally rip your head off should you look at them incorrectly

Will soon be 50 degrees in summer with people clamoring to move to Croydon.

Yet again, I’m ahead of the curve.

Still better than the US.

Croydon does have it’s attractions, located near the buzzing multicultural hub of Burwood and the artsy vibes of Ashfield…

Guaranteed it’s as much of a shithole as the Croydon in Melbourne and the Croydon here…
