US Election 2024

Wow, the GOP ad buys in PA are now massively focusing on transgender concerns. That really suggests they have polling showing it is an issue that resonates with a lot of swing voters who otherwise might have concerns about Trump. Apparently there was one in almost every commercial break during the Eagles game in the Philadelphia area broadcast.

The RW now obsessed with Harris not being able to show evidence of having worked at MacDonald’s as she claimed over 40 years ago and treating this as evidence that she lied about it. This is what the Trump stunt on the weekend was all about
“she lied but I have now worked at one.” Which of course is a lie because he didnt work there. He participated in a stunt photo op in a closed location with paid actors. All in pursuit of arguing the dumbest possible campaign argument anyone can imagine.

It is a perfect illustration of how expectations of any Dem campaign to be able to rebut Republican attacks are so wrong headed, because the attacks themselves are typically insanely stupid and no sooner have you put time into rebutting one they pop up with another equally dumb one.

Harris should say she shovelled pig shit and get Trump to do that as one of his photo ops.

This is exactly what I was talking about.

Trump wins the day because Kamala, by correctly describing the stakes of the election and the danger Trump poses, acknowledges that some voters like that. Trump 1- 0 Kamala

The “we’re never gonna let it happen again” one takes a lot of liberties so I get why people dont like it. Trump has repeatedly spoken about this being the last election Republicans will have to worry about voting in because if they win this one they will have the power to properly defeat the threat. With Trump he speaks so ineloquently and imprecisely that there are always alternative ways of interpreting what he is saying, and as much as that opens up terrible defenses of him it also means there are lots of times it is reasonable to have an interpretation of what he is saying that he probably wasn’t saying at that moment, especially when if there is one thing he is good at its the nod and the wink say the thing without saying it approach (“Proud boys, stand down and stand by”). So I get why people would take issue what the interpretation of those lines in that part of the speech, but when an anti democratic candidate who has frequently spoken about this being the last election that will matter in the context of plans for gutting democratic processes and entrenching power, those sorts of interpretations are fair game. Is it good politics is another question, and I get that debate. But in reality even if they used a clip that took fewer liberties, the people who reject their framing would still be rejecting it so I get the argument that at this stage of the campaign it is unproductive minutia.

The CBS one though I dont get how anyone can take any issue with it. This is Trump advocating for CBS losing their license and being taken off the air, something he has repeatedly positioned as being in the powers of president to do, and is stated as part of his criticisms of 60 minutes.

Without context it is still pretty clearly what it is described as being. But the context here is unusually unambiguous for Trump. It is part of his ongoing criticisms of news outlets that give him coverage he doesnt like and a stated desire to address that by using the power of his office to suppress if he were to win, using measures up to and including removing their license to operate.

Time and time again the party on the left or centre has been criticised for playing dirty but sometimes you have to.

Democrats lost election after election by not doing so.

I’m also worried that if Trump wins and his health doesn’t allow him to hold off, then you’ll be stuck with Vance.

Note, this is not as much about a presidency addressing economic policy via social media, but
about the uncertainty that is introduced into the system by a president saying incoherent things about policy from his official platform that no one knows for sure whether it is representative of official thinking or just covfefe.

For all these Tech bros complaining that Kamala’s FTC will obstruct the mergers their business model is based on, this will make it that much more painful to raise the VC money start ups need to get through their first several years. The result will be founders having to give up more of their company from the get go and with every additional raise, and then at the slightest set back facing being squeezed out of their own company before they’ve even had time to take it far enough to get to a buy out.

At some point if US presidents persist in attacking the independence of the Federal Reserve and other market assurance bodies, including offering pronouncements on the direction of monetary policy, the US dollar is going to give up a significant part of the premium it has commanded as a reserve currency for over a century.

Fascinating/depressing breakdown highlighting the important difference between issues and policy, things that often get conflated. When voters talk about “policies” overwhelmingly they are talking about issues and those views are formed typically based on vibes and what a voter imagines a candidate would do more than actual evaluation of, or even knowledge of, actual policy.

“Crime is my most important issue and that is why I support Trump, despite me hating everything he says he’d do to address my primary concern”
