US Election 2024

‘reportedly raged’

lot of he said she said going on in that article…be interesting to see if he did contribute towards the funeral, not just go off ‘reports’ that he didnt…

seems a very weak article, at best.

as pointed out here, the criticisms seem so thick and fast that posting speculated gossip in a tabloid style article actually works in his favour…

not that i have a dog in the fight apart from the obviously greater world wide picture…

Ah, something else that will be taken as gospel truth by a bunch of democrats that think every negative Trump story is 100% true. Desperation has truely set in

I expect you will hear this from Harris/Walz in an interview within the next week. BTW, this is the same “reporter” that made the claims of “calling fallen soldiers suckers”.

Fair enough if you don’t trust the source. But the truth is even if he said it on camera, you would excuse it.

"A person that thinks those who defend their country in uniform, or are shot down or seriously wounded in combat, or spend years being tortured as POWs are all ‘suckers’ because ‘there is nothing in it for them. A person that did not want to be seen in the presence of military amputees because ‘it doesn’t look good for me.’ A person who demonstrated open contempt for a Gold Star family — for all Gold Star families — on TV during the 2016 campaign, and rants that our most precious heroes who gave their lives in America’s defense are ‘losers’ and wouldn’t visit their graves in France.”

The words of John Kelly , former Trump White House chief of staff.

She’s not credible. John Kelly is not credible. His VP wasn’t credible. His own employees aren’t credible. Journalists are not credible.

Only weirdo is credible (if he isn’t just being sarcastic that is).

They’re eating the dogs is credible.

Just go on the indisputable track record of what Trump has already said and done.

It’s all there on the public record.

If his record causes you to extend the benefit of the doubt to him over his comments about paying for the funeral of a Mexican, I’m not sure what you have been looking at since 2016.

I’ve said it before, but I honestly think that winning the Presidency is Trump’s only chance of staying out of jail.

If he wins, justice will not catch up with him.
If he loses - and there’s a fair chance it will rumble on and be challenged for a while after the election - but once we have a result, if he is on the wrong side of it, I think it will close in on him quite rapidly.

There are numerous cases coming against him, and ultimately he can only be protected by office.

If he loses, there will be a decoupling with the GOP as they will want to jettison a serial loser.

At that point he is going to struggle, and it might all come down on him rather quickly. I would imagine Putin will have a very nice penthouse lined up for him in Moscow in order to avoid American justice.

Imagine the scenes if that happened.

Yes, that is the standard defensive language of journalism when the reported was not there to hear it themselves, even when the quote is sourced from multiple people and “contemporaneous notes” of the meeting where it was stated, as was the case here. As for whether he did stump up the money, if you read the primary article the Daily Beast is quoting from, it clearly cites the family lawyer claiming they billed Trump as requested but never received anything back.

We do have audio of Kelly, his former CoS, giving his opinion that Trump is “fascist to his core.” That coming out the same day as this Goldberg article is without hyperbole potentially one of the worst campaign days for any candidate ever. And it’s just a blip because people don’t care and the press don’t even try to make people.

Skepticism about reports critical of him is reasonable. Skepticism due to questions that are explicitly answered in the piece is an example of just how defense of Trump (or, taking the anti-anti position…I’m not defending him I am just rejecting this criticisms of him) at this point are just a reflex from people who have dug in to not listening

It would be interesting (in a morbidly curious way) to see if the cult backs a completely senile 80+ year-old Trump in 2028 if he lives that long.

I can’t see it.

I think Trump is in the last chance saloon with this election. If he loses, he will quickly be yesterday’s man. His base will continue to love him, but the actual powerbrokers will start to collectively grow a spine, and Trump will be out in the cold.

Arguably whatever comes to the fore next - for example JD Vance, will have to ‘kiss the ring’ and play a game, as he won’t want to completely alienate millions of Trump supporters.

But Trump will be yesterday’s man.

I don’t know about that. I thought January 6th would have been the last straw for a lot of them. Hell, even the likes of Cruz tried to pull away from Trumpism in the immediate aftermath, thinking that the tide had finally turned. But then narratives quickly went back to business as usual when they realized the mob would never turn on their mad king. I think they’ll follow him to the grave at this point.

As if to prove my point, some of you have already taken it in as truth. That predictably didn’t take long.

And what a powerful point it is you have made.

It will be interesting to see, and you may be right.

I thought the u-turn last time, after January 6th, was galling. Just when it seemed as though a few from the ‘party of law and order’ were starting to speak out, it was all swept under the rug and he regrouped.

So if he loses again he may yet continue to thrive… but my take is his age, and one more huge defeat, will see the powerbrokers in the GOP kick him to touch. That may be nuanced, as they will all be jostling for position and will want to be careful with Trump’s current base.

We now have years of evidence and a long list of pretenders showing us that Trumpism without Trump seems absurd and tiring even to those who support Trump. As much as he didnt create this and instead only ignited a sentiment that already existed, it was hidden under the surface because the sort of leader who can raise it to this sort of heights are thankfully rare.
