An “alternative” in the Kelly Ann Conway sense of the word, as in it is bollocks. It is pro trump spin based on a only partially correct set of facts.
The driest description of the events around debates I can come up with that before Harris was officially nominated a second debate was already on the books that Trump had committed to. Once Biden dropped out there was a lot of back and forth from both sides about the status of that second debate, with the Harris team being steadfast that the ABC debate was scheduled and they intended to show up for it, and Trump and his team airing positions that were all over the map (we will debate her anytime anywhere, we wont debate her, we will debate her but only on Fox). Eventually Trump publicly committed to the previously agreed ABC debate, while stating he was only doing so if Harris also agreed to two further debates. The Harris team said they were open to additional debates but would wait to see if Trump actually showed up for the ABC debate before spending time negotiating any further debates and the ABC debate ahead without that negotiation being raised again. In the immediate aftermath of that debate performance Trump was non-committal about additional debates and within 48 hours of it we had unequivocal statements from both him and his team that they would not debate again.
There is room for interpretation for what was going on from both sides. For instance, I think Trump’s posturing before the ABC debate was a reasonable approach to try to pressure a new candidate who needed exposure into terms that would have been less favourable than the ABC debate. It didn’t work, and it arguably gave Harris a platform to show confidence and strength by standing firm and ultimately getting their way, but I think the Trump team were right to apply that pressure. What is clear though is that afterwards, as in immediately afterwards in response to how terribly he did, there has been no serious interest from Trump or his team in doing it again, and an increasing lack of interest in appearing in any venue that would test him, hence him pulling out of 60 minutes and the CNN townhall.
