US Election 2024

You mean the person who peddled lies about Virginia’s education system is dishonest?

And that the totally apolitical non-captured Supreme Court permitted it?

What a shock.

There is zero chance I step out of the house for a couple of days after trash collection day. And very anecdotally, I have other friends saying the same. There were plenty of reasons to be cautious, and then the rally happened.

I’m going to hunker down and read @Sithbare’s posts.

Die hard MAGAs are in a silo where most are probably unreachable. But a good portion of people sympathetic to Trump are not so much in a silo where they only encounter absurd in the tank Trump stuff, but just in a bad information environment that doesn’t give them useful information. And a big part of that is the establishment press have abdicated their role in narrative setting with their coverage of him.

This is a perfect example.

Biden makes a clumsy criticism of the Trump campaign. Republicans fake outrage. Biden cleans it up. Republicans pretend they don’t understand and remain outraged. The press then pretends to believe the outrage and cover the meta story about “if the story were true, this is how people who believe it would react”. A college educated, married dad of 3 who wants to tell himself he is informed but doesnt really have time to read a newspaper is not directly reading that Politico story, but by the time the news of it trickles down to him second or third hand he receives it as “we have a decency problem in Washington, both sides as bad as each other.”

Even before the silos became an issue this is how the majority of people got their “news”. Not from directly consuming it first hand, but experiencing the narrative that forms around the individual stories. When it comes to Trump, the main stream have written a good number of stories clearly explaining his criminality and unfitness for office. But it has not taken the next step to that defining their narrative of him with every subsequent piece about him. I mean, the NYT has won Pulitzers for investigative reporting on Trump’s business crimes…yet the very same publication will then present his comments about his legal defenses over those crimes credulously and allow people to believe to believe there is merit in the indictments being political lawfare. Do they kick David Farenthold in the balls everytime they write one of those, or just spit on his computer monitor to tell him his work is pointless?

Narrative creation is something that is not only completely within their power to do, but the standard way they approach almost all of their ongoing stories. Which means it is a conscious decision to not present him and the situation as it is, and the result is probably a third of the country are open to being better informed but are kept badly informed.

I used to really enjoy Josh Marshall and was gutted when TPM went subscription. I hadn’t been there for ages and it was nice to be reminded of his existence. Anyhow , more from him here on Biden’s gaffe ;

He is great. But I worry for his sanity. The strange thing is he seems to have far more high profile converts these days than he did when I imagine you first started reading him and yet the flaws he rails against in the media landscape are more glaring and impactful than ever.

Serious consideration that has followed me for a while now… At 78yrs of age, also known as the Twilight, kick-back, slow the hell down why don’t ya years… he does seem to project a certain energy/fitness at times… I’ve been wondering if the MAGA, or specifically, there is a Doctor of theirs administering shots/drugs of a sort… You know, the type that keep ya standing on your feet, but, turn your brain to mush…!

Trump is one boring, bastard…

Yes.

19th century race science has seen a real revival on the right, which casts DEI as a program to give jobs to black people they necessarily don’t have the IQ to be qualified for. It is why there are so many on the right convinced she is a bumbling moron

His uncle worked at MIT as well. Great IQ genes. It’s why he knows so much about nuclear…they call it nuclear warming.
