US Election 2024

And I was wondering why Trump was speaking at the airport

According to the mayorā€™s office, the Trump campaign still owes the City of Albuquerque just about $445,000 from his 2019 visit. That includes:

  • $71,000 for police services
  • $7,000 for barricades
  • More than $132,000 for employee leave (City Hall shut down for half-a-day)
  • Interest from the past five years that is still accruing

Of course, Albuquerque is not the only city waiting for the Trump campaign to pay some outstanding bills.

@Sithbare start cooking my korma. Iā€™m coming and Momala is coming with me.

Itā€™s genuinely wild a man is running for president on a platform of Making America Great Again yet has bilked a large collection of municipalities for significant amounts, necessarily hurting the residents, and it is not a story.

Albuquerque is a Democratic town in a Democratic state, but many of the places he has screwed over are largely Republican. It is amazing that they are still in thrall to the carnie grifter

Trump sues CBS over Kamala Harris ā€˜60 Minutesā€™ interview

Story by Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump sued CBS on Thursday over an interview of his Democratic rival Kamala Harris aired on its ā€œ60 Minutesā€ news program in early October that the lawsuit alleged was misleading, according to a court filing.

The complaint, filed in federal court in the Northern District of Texas, alleges that the network aired two different responses from Harris responding to a question about the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

The version that aired during the ā€œ60 Minutesā€ program on Oct. 6 did not include what the lawsuit calls a ā€œword saladā€ response from Harris about the Biden administrationā€™s influence on Israelā€™s conduct of the war.

A spokesperson for CBS did not immediately respond to a request for comment

Trump and Harris face each other in what polls show to be a tight race ahead of Tuesdayā€™s U.S. presidential election.

The suit demanded a jury trial and about $10 billion in damages, the filing showed. It alleges violations of a Texas law barring deceptive acts in the conduct of business

Trump has repeatedly assailed the network on the campaign trail over the episode and has threatened to revoke CBSā€™s broadcasting license if elected. CBS has said Trump backed out of his own planned interview with ā€œ60 Minutes.ā€

They should lower that voting age then. Iā€™m sure theyā€™ll all be in favour of that.

Wow, very un-woke of you, weā€™re not all Hindus. Sorry, looks like Iā€™ll have to cancel you.

Nah, she is hedging to be sure, but her play is to be the GOP candidate who can face Harris in '28, while also being a Trump cabinet member if he wins.

Feels like Iā€™ve posted this already, but again itā€™s timely.

This is where journalists refuse to acknowledge their role in the polarisation of politics, where they refuse to acknowledge that theyā€™re not covering political issues as affecting peopleā€™s everyday lives, but covering them in terms of, which political party wins? Who wins this, who wins that, thatā€™s all the framing of events, where the identity of the winners is more important than the societal impacts.

lol ā€¦ this musk guy has really got his finger on the pulse.

@Nobluff

ā€œCalling people animals is generally not acceptable. Calling drug dealers, human traffickers, murderers, rapists, etc animals, I really donā€™t have an issue with this. This is how I interpret ā€œanimalsā€. I donā€™t think he is referring to every illegal immigrant. Just like I donā€™t think Biden thinks all Republicans are garbage, just like I donā€™t really believe that Harris/Clinton/etc think Trump is the next Hitler or a Fascist.ā€

Iā€™m sure they do think heā€™s a fascist because he speaks like one. He uses classic fascist language to talk about people he disagrees with. Vermin, animals, the enemy within, threats of violence and retribution. Either he means what he says, in which case he is a fascist, or heā€™s joking, which would be bizarre, even by his standards, in the final stages of an election campaign.

ā€œI think it is something said in order to change the mind of gullible voters, imo this does not work in this case. I am not saying that I think there are a lot of gullible voters, I just think that there are people that hate Trump so much that they comfortable labelling him as such. I think people here donā€™t really, deep down, think he is the next Hitler. Itā€™s a title that diminishes what happened to millions of Jews, Gypsies (what they were called then), mentally and physically disabled people, POWā€™s, and the countless lives of combatants and innocent civilians that were lost during the war, on both sides.ā€

The Hitler comparison is a sidetrack. Not all fascists are Hitler, not all communists are Stalin.

ā€œI donā€™t excuse when politicians use this language however I also understand that it is also purposefully interpreted to suit ones political ideologies. Republicans do it, Democrats do it, and they do it to win an election. In one part of the country they will say A in order to get the vote, while in other parts of the country they will say B in order to get the votes, on the same question. I have always believed this.ā€

This is an extreme cop out. One side has been using violent and disgusting language since 2015, the other side gets pulled up for a single use of the word ā€˜garbageā€™. There is no comparison and this ā€˜theyā€™re all the sameā€™ narrative has no basis in fact.

"My position in this election is trust. I donā€™t trust Harris or Biden, I donā€™t trust Trump, however I trust him significantly more than the aforementioned. I have from the very start believed that the election will be won on the economy/inflation and the border/immigration. I believe that Trump is the best for this even with all his flaws, and so do the majority of voters in the USA as per the polls (I cant vote). "

Biden has steered the US economy out of the Covid/Ukraine crisis into being the strongest itā€™s been for fifty years. What on earth more could he do to earn your trust?
Trump left the US economy in a terrible state, as is common with Republican presidents. All he did was cut taxes for the hyper rich. His policies on the economy and immigration would be hugely damaging for ordinary Americans.

ā€œHarris has an edge on the abortion which is anywhere from 3rd to 5th on the list of issues.ā€

You obviously donā€™t know any women.

ā€œYes, I do believe in the polls, I just donā€™t think the national polls with regards to popular vote are that interesting. I do like the polls for battleground states. I do like the polls on issues. I donā€™t think all the pollsters are good enough as there are some with Rep bias and some with Dem bias. I think overall the bias is against Rep and especially Trump as the democratic party, imo, has become the party of intolerance when it comes to Trump and his supporters. I do think the pollsters will once again underestimate Trump in the polls, on average.ā€

Based on what? There have been more Rep leaning polls in recent weeks trying to create the idea that Trump is ahead so he can justify his rejection of any unfavourable result.

ā€œI think Trump will now win the popular vote (didnā€™t before). I think he will get all of the voters he got last election, plus a few million more, maybe even more than Biden got. I think he will sweep the battlegrounds (maybe missing 1). I donā€™t think it is possible for him to win the popular AND lose the election. I do think there will be election fraud, I always believe there is, I have just never thought there is enough election fraud in the USA to change the result of an election.ā€

We donā€™t know what will happen. No one does, and Iā€™m very sceptical of anyone making predictions at this stage. Itā€™s just too close to call.
Only one side has attempted election interference so far and itā€™s not the Democrats.

ā€œIf Trump loses I expect he will fight it unsuccessfully in court, I donā€™t think he will organize a march on the capital to overthrow the government. If he, in an alternate reality does try, he will need more than 5 thousand supporters with banners, pitch forks, utility knives and a handgun.ā€

How on earth can you make this assertion? He did it before and thereā€™s absolutely no evidence that he regrets it. The opposite in fact. Everything heā€™s saying and doing points to a repeat of that attack on democracy.

ā€œAs mentioned, I cant vote, however if I could I would 100% vote for Trump. It, country to popular opinion, doesnā€™t make me racist, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, fascist, a Hitler lover, a Trump lover, unintelligent, garbage, etc.ā€

It doesnā€™t make you any of those things, but it does make you misguided. There are myriad ways that Trumpā€™s personality makes him a bad candidate. He is clearly a hate filled, mendacious narcissist at the very least. I donā€™t know how thatā€™s not plain from observing him in these three election campaigns.
Even if you ignore that and concentrate on his policies, his economic plan is widely regarded by top economists as a disaster, his foreign policy is to give a free hand to tyrants and dictators, his immigration policy is to round up and deport millions of people without any thought to the consequences and so on. None of his policies will have a positive impact on ordinary Americans.

ā€œI hope for the sake of the Democratic party they lose so badly that they reevaluate what they stand for, as they have truly lost their way over the past 10 years. I stand with Musk and Maher on this and agree that the party has lost their identity as they have moved too far to the left in certain instances hence watering down the moderates that made the democratic party that I remember.ā€

This is an extraordinary claim. The Republican party is in the hands of fascists like Roger Stone and the Proud Boys and you think the Dems are too radical?
Harrris and Walz are moderates, thereā€™s nothing extreme about their policies. The most extreme Democrats are nowhere near as rabid as the Greene/Boebert/Gaetz types.

ā€œI also can honestly not keep up with answering every single reply or mention in this thread, I truly am busy and prefer to spend my time in more LFC related threads. I am 1 person in a thread full of people that are very contrary to my opinions. I give you the benefit of that doubt that you understand this.ā€

I get that and I appreciate your reply. Most of us donā€™t get to interact with Trump supporters and I just want to understand what makes anyone with an ounce of common sense think that he would be the better choice. Iā€™m still in the dark, to be honest, but Iā€™ll continue to try to understand, because we really need to be listening to each other. There is too little of that right now and it puts the whole system in peril.
