US Election 2024

For the latter, don’t you also have the Rothermeres to thank for that? And Trinity Mirror, etc.

For the former, is it Sinclair I’m thinking of, that’s the radio network? There’s a lot more “conservative” media outlets than just the Murdoch crew.

Tbf… Some, I assume, are good people.

Also important to add that Jeet was 100% sure to write a “the Dems are the problem” article the morning after the election no matter the result. Be very skeptical of any “this is what we need to do differently” analyses so soon after a loss, but to me it is telling that even this resounding win for Trump and the broad degree of popularity he showed in doing it not only doesn’t make him reevaluate his criticisms of Clinton’s loss (maybe it was a harder race to win even then that we all assumed at the time?) but gives him more fuel to kick her in the teeth. Furthermore, I think anyone who grapples with this question of how Dems need to change to do better in elections and ignores the problem of how to get their message heard in this information environment is just standing on a soapbox and not taking seriously questions of what needs to change.

I think this is a good take on the anti incumbency headwinds any Dem would have faced in this election caused by the ongoing reverberations of Covid. The irony is lots of the complaints relate to actions taken during Trump’s time in office. This phenomenon would be a lot more rational if it was any Republic other than Trump who took advantage of it.

Given how large inflation loomed, it is absolutely clear that there is a significant disconnect in many electorates. I recently listened to someone rage at Justin Trudeau for failing to control Canadian inflation, while knowing full well that this person had taken full advantage of the pandemic income supports rushed out to provide for those who could not work during the extensive shutdowns and restrictions. There is a straight line between that spending and the inflation that has functioned as a tax to pay for it.

Listened to three minutes of LBC earlier and interestingly they were focussing on the fact that as more men vote in the USA and white men are the majority, a black woman didn’t win due to racism and mysogony. Then went on to say that 98% of black women voted for Harris. No judgement on that whatsoever.

Your favourite James O’Brien yesterday pointed out that simple things that really matter to voters won the day. Prices at the petrol pump being a big one

He’s right there the USA runs on GASSSS. I’d disagree with James on the colour of Liverpool’s home kit. But I like his style and have great respect for his presenting and debating skills and knowledge. Why I come here I’ll never know

Note “denaturalization”…not deportation of recently arrived people without legal status.

People will instinctively picture AoC, but the biggest thing I think Dems can take from her is not her message, but that she NEVER stops. You look at people like Ossoff, who got tons of credit for how good and modern a campaign he ran to win his tough race in 2022…this is why we need young candidates because they understand how to talk to young people. Then he won and has disappeared into the role of “doing the job” not to be heard from by regular people for the 2 years since.

It is true that lots of people do not pay attention to politicians or politics until close to an election and Dems have internalized that to mean that is when you start trying to talk to people. But in reality elections are won and lost on the narrative that forms before the campaigns even start, and even voters who aren’t consciously paying attention in that period will come to be somewhat aware of those narratives. Dems seem to be expecting other people to do that narrative creation for them in the in between period and in this segregated information age it just isnt going to happen.

Lots of people are back on the lefties need to fund lefty partisan media train, but that misses the point. The people the party has lost are not going to come home because of the presence of an overtly political podcast. People who are remotely interested in that stuff already have plenty of valuable content and voted in droves. The issue is that somehow the supposedly apolitical spaces - places like Barstool, Rogan, the fucking moron on ESPN - has become so right coded that people not paying attention to politics take on the right’s framing of every argument. That is the space Dems need to think about getting more left coded perspectives into. I have no idea how to address that but is starts with lefty politicians actually talking to people outside of elections, and that doesnt mean hits on CNN or Morning Joe.

The perfect distilation of the Pro-Trump vote

It’s bad there are circumstances that keep beef prices low…but for the things I buy I need Trump to address inflation.

I get the economics of that sector may be challenging, and I get the emotional pull of wanting things that improve your specific personal situation, but surely it is not hard to understand that “perfectly calibrate your economic approach so I can sell my shit high and buy things low” is not a workable idea, unless we have a constitutional amendment that requires you to be a cattle farmer to be able to vote.

I get the feeling Nick might be in for some frustrating times ahead.

Exit polls should only be viewed as preliminary, but it is interesting to see this in the context of all of the talk of a racial realignment

This is the same share of the black vote as all Republicans received this century who were not running against Obama. It is a lower hispanic vote share that Bush received in 2004.

Even without putting it into the historical context calling Trump’s a multi-racial coalition is pretty absurd when you consider that break downs like this are confused by treating hispanic as distinct from being black or white as opposed to it being a completely separate question (i.e. lots of those Trump voting Latinos are “white”).

And now the inevitable

Lots of criticisms from the left over this, but there is no other option. This will be shut down on day 1 under Trump and if that happens the details of what Smith has disappear for ever. One of the benefits of a special counsel is there is a requirement for a public airing of the findings, and so by starting to wrap it up now they can least spend the next 8 weeks writing that report.

My initial, gut response to these posts is, ‘I hope someone’s father/brother/uncle stabs these cunts in the throat with a screwdriver.’

Not very helpful.

This guy is one of the best regarded Biotech market analysts. I am surprised by his seeming shock and inability to explain it, but maybe he’s just trying to be as apolitical as possible, but this a signal that people expect Trump to fuck up clinical development

I believe in empowering women. They can do it themselves. Also, more justifiable as self-defence.

It’s all pissing in the wind. As long as people, especially young people, have completely, willingingly and gleefully lost any connection with objective truth, it literally doesn’t matter what the democrats say.

Everyone wants to be a fucking contrarian. To be the person who thinks they are smart enough to see the truth, and just end up swallowing and regurgitating a load of lies instead. There are a few of those on this website.

A few people I know in America are consoling themselves with it only being four years. He’ll be out then. Really? You think so? He isn’t leaving after four years. That two term term limit is going to be the first thing he tears up. The only way that fat fuck is leaving the White House now is when they carry him out in a box.

It was interesting to see Ivanka on the stage with him when he celebrated his victory. She has stayed well away since the first term ended.

My prediction is Trump will try to engineer some sort of family dynasty, and Ivanka is the one he would like to become President.
