US Election 2024

Important to note that it is voter share, not absolute shifts. Voter turnout is projected to be around 2% lower nationally than in 2020, and it looks very much like Harris was taking the brunt of that. I would very much like to find a similar map of turnout.

I think it’s important to distinguish between outlets - the MAGA crowd want you to label them as such. If anything it points to why liberal democracies must destroy anti democratic right wing media if they want to survive - literally take them (or their Lachlan Murdoch type proprietors) down whenever there’s an opportunity.

I get what you’re saying.

But as someone who actively pays money to a supposed newspaper of record in the NYT, their coverage is appalling. It’s not even about outright propaganda, it’s that mindless “enlightened centrism” or “must cover both sides equally” that is also pervasive at the BBC for example, that is very damaging. It legitimises viewpoints that just aren’t legitimate.

You need to change publications. The Graun and LRB are both ok.

What’s the LRB?

I like the Grauniad’s longer pieces, they are some excellent specimens of journalism in my opinion. The shorter articles though, are often just hit-and-miss.

I favour Reuters and FT for shorter reports, although the latter does do excellent longer features too. Bloomberg does great for industry-specific articles, and I’ve learnt a lot about new things from there, such as salt batteries, sand and concrete energy storage, etc.

Couple of thoughts

  • Two on this graphic are house members, but a further 3 or 4 have been heavily tipped for other administration roles. Yes those seats are in strong red seats and so will be filled by someone else from the GOP, but that is not a quick process. That means Trump is chipping away at an already small house majority. Previously this would have been viewed as incompetence, from not understanding the implications. But not this time around. This is a big signal that their goals do not require passage through the legislature.
  • Rubio is an old school GOP hawk completely at odds with Trump’s supposed anti-war ideology (psst, Trump was never anti war…he was just anti war in Ukraine because wanted to give Putin what he wanted).
  • Latinos had better hide their dogs because Noem is coming for them

MAGA in a nutshell. Nothing productive to contribute, just enjoyment of someone else’s displeasure. You go. Well done.

Waiting waiting

Better than how you’ll be doing for the next 4 years, that’s for sure. At least, those of us who are fortunate enough to be at a considerate distance.

Enjoy the tariffs and the deportations. There’s more to come.

Let’s not forget what happens to inflation when the President controls the interest rate, having ‘ended the Fed’. Lee (Senate Utah-R) is suggesting he will move a bill next year to do that, and Elon Musk is enthusiastically supporting the idea.

Unfortunately they won’t be the only ones to suffer from that.

He’s just following Erdogan’s lead. It’s worked wonders for Turkey’s economy:

Of course, Turkey has nowhere near as much to lose. If the USD loses its premium as the pre-eminent global reserve currency, there will be a significant economic hit/adjustment that will be almost unique to the US. The rest of the world has been steadily shifting away from USD as a reserve for over 20 years, but taking an axe to central bank independence would significantly accelerate that. Just the threat of a currency re-alignment is going to put downward pressure on USD as central banks and other holders shift out of USD in favour of more trustworthy currencies.

So what is the play here? Sure, Trump doesnt know what he’s talking about and is surrounded by idiots who dont either. But there are people close to him pushing this who do, theoretically at least, understand what this will lead to. What are they trying to get out it? Every explanation I have seen is always several steps short of being a coherent theory. Most of it revolves around Crypto, but again the end point seems disconnected.

I can already see the Swiss franc soaring again, as always when the US fuck up. Very much against our interests, as our economy heavily relies on exportation… :see_no_evil:
